The recent vermin report is up 60% from the first four months of 2019 as well.<\/p>\n<p>Pat Marino, who leases Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 approved Rat Traps, an innovative, filing cabinet-looking rodent death pool, even admitted to being outnumbered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re having an impact, we\u2019re catching a lot of rats. But there are millions out there. I don\u2019t want to be an alarmist, but there are a lot,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/rodents-on-the-rise-how-nyc-is-losing-the-rat-battle\">Marino told Gothamist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/nyc-rat-catching-dogs-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Rats have always been an issue in NYC. But since the pandemic, the problem has scurried out of hand.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>So, what is it about the pandemic that\u2019s had rats scurrying city streets with a vengeance?<\/p>\n<p>A Department of Health spokesperson said that an abundance of food waste \u2014 partly caused by an uptick in outdoor dining \u2014 has led to the rise of the rats, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Frye, a Cornell pest management specialist for the state of New York, warned the AP that a return to pre-pandemic habits \u201calso means business as usual for rat problems that are directly tied to human behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gothamist also reported that the Department of Sanitation dumped an early pandemic policy that required large-scale residential buildings to keep their waste in containers. He\u2019s instituted padlocked, curbside trash bins that aim to lessen the mountains of garbage bags that rats often feast on. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re tired of the rodents, you\u2019re tired of the smell, you\u2019re tired of seeing food, waste and spillage,\u201d Adams said during a Times Square press conference.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/eric-adams-rat-trap-08.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Eric Adams was passionate about getting rats out of NYC during his mayoral campaign. But things are worse than ever.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Rashid Umar Abbasi<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the chair of the City Council\u2019s Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management, Sandy Nurse, told Gothamist she wants to see \u201ca more aggressive rat mitigation strategy, particularly in areas with high complaints, like public housing areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City Council is also gnawing on Adams to inject $22 million into its budget to expand trash basket pickup to twice a day as opposed to once.
