authority over NYC schools&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A group of parents blasted state lawmakers Wednesday night for undermining Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 ability to oversee the New York City public school system.<\/p>\n<p>The parents claim state politicians are dictating educational policy, micro-managing the education department and creating an unwieldy 23-person oversight board.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic-run body is expected to pass legislation Thursday that would renew mayoral control of the school system for only two years.<\/p>\n<p>However, critics say poison pills attached to the bill will dilute the\u00a0ability of the mayor and Schools Chancellor David Banks to make decisions.<\/p>\n<p>One string: lawmakers intend to pass accompanying legislation requiring the Adams administration to meet benchmarks to lower class sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Adams warned that dictating class size caps could force the Department of Education to cut\u00a0guidance counselors and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> workers plus arts programs, school <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Kathy Hochul should veto the bill if lawmakers don\u2019t fix\u00a0it. She initially proposed that Adams be given a four-year renewal of school control but lawmakers objected.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe only people who benefit from this bill are the United Federation of Teachers,\u201d said Mona Davids, president of the NYC Parents Union, told The Post on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCodifying class size caps in State law is an extreme step and unfair to Mayor Adams\u2019 administration and Schools Chancellor David Banks,\u201d Davids said in a separate, joint\u00a0press statement\u00a0with other parent leaders and organizations that had garnered 40 signatories by Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, there is no guaranteed funding in New York State\u2019s budget to address any budget increases resulting from the legislation.\u00a0In addition, at a time when the school system continues to adjust in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, it does not make sense to make drastic changes through unfunded mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City\u2019s schools are experiencing reduced enrollment, resulting in fewer funds, while simultaneously experiencing a shortage of teachers. Finally, while the efficacy of reduced class size continues to be debated, it is clear that other current and future programs may be sacrificed to meet the unfunded mandate. This stinks to high heaven, and shame on them for trying to get this bill passed,\u201d Davids said.<\/p>\n<p>But the legislation is likely to be approved as drafted despite objections from City Hall and some parents, said Assembly Education Committee Chairman Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I know the bill is set and we\u2019re going to pass it tomorrow [Thursday],\u201d said Benedetto, a retired school teacher.<\/p>\n<p>He defended the legislation as reasonable and vowed that Albany would provide the funds to lower class sizes over five years and said it would be \u201cgood for education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benedetto said the legislature can always make fixes and down-played opposition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the City of New York everyone has an opinion,\u201d he said.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
