We would have also accepted \u201cwow,\u201d \u201cOMG,\u201d and \u201chooray,\u201d given the potential implications of this incredible breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up front:<\/strong> Time crystals are a recently discovered phase of matter. The exciting thing about this experiment is that it lays the groundwork for quantum computers operating with time crystals as qubits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>Per the team\u2019s peer-reviewed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-30783-w.pdf\">research paper<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In our experiments, two coupled time crystals consisting of spin-wave quasiparticles (magnons) form a macroscopic two-level system. The two levels evolve in time as determined intrinsically by a nonlinear feedback, allowing us to construct spontaneous two-level dynamics.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The paper goes on to state that, in the superfluid system they used for their experiment, \u201cthe observable time crystal life time can be extended up to a thousand seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This seemingly props this work up as the likely foundation and blueprint for a quantum coherent system built out of time crystals.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons why we\u2019re so excited about this are threefold:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>One of quantum computing\u2019s toughest challenges is maintaining coherency<\/li>\n<li>Time crystals can, experimentally, be created at room temperature<\/li>\n<li>This the closest thing to a free lunch we\u2019ve seen in quantum physics<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s a free lunch?<\/strong> You\u2019re not supposed to talk about perpetual motion machines when discussing physics papers because you\u2019ll invoke the wrath of the purists who think they aren\u2019t possible.<\/p>\n<p>A perpetual motion machine is something that, theoretically, could produce energy without consuming any. As far as we know, this doesn\u2019t exist. But, if it did, it would defy the laws of classical physics. And, it would also eliminate the need for \u201cfuel\u201d or external power requirements.<\/p>\n<p>If we could build a perpetual motion machine, it\u2019s possible we could use it to power our world for <i>free<\/i><i\/><i\/><i\/><i\/><i\/><i\/><i\/><i\/>.<\/p>\n<p>The Lancaster team\u2019s work touches on the idea of a free lunch (perpetual motion machine) because time crystals, linked together, can function as an extremely low-power qubit.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Autti described the concept in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/physicists-have-built-a-two-body-system-using-time-crystals-for-the-first-time\">an interview<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>Alert\u2019s Michelle Starr:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everybody knows that perpetual motion machines are impossible. However, in quantum physics perpetual motion is okay as long as we keep our eyes closed. By sneaking through this crack we can make time crystals.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By \u201ckeep our eyes closed,\u201d we assume Autti\u2019s referring to the fact that time crystals, like nearly everything in the quantum world, can\u2019t really be directly observed.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, a free lunch sure would be something to see. And this research potentially brings us closer than we\u2019ve ever been to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quick take:<\/strong> The last time I was this excited over a quantum computing paper was when the existence of time crystals was confirmed. I think this research could be among the most important technological advances of our lifetimes \u2014 potentially in all of history.<\/p>\n<p>The promise of quantum computing at future-scale underwrites nearly every theoretical <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> we aspire to one day create. Teleportation machines, warp drives, cold fusion, extended human lives, planet-scale terraforming, Dyson Spheres, and countless other fantasy-fodder staples could go from science fiction to actuation if we build sufficiently capable quantum computing systems.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows?
