\n Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who recently vowed to reopen London\u2019s \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera\u201d despite what the show\u2019s producer called a \u201chuge financial hit\u201d from the coronavirus shutdown, has volunteered to get an experimental COVID-19 vaccine \u201cto prove that theatres can re-open safely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am excited that tomorrow I am going to be vaccinated for the Oxford Covid 19 trial,\u201d Webber tweeted today. \u201cI\u2019ll do anything to prove that theatres can re-open safely.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cCats\u201d composer app<\/a>arently was referring to the vaccine being developed by Oxford University and the drug company AstraZeneca. Thousands of people in the UK, the United States, Brazil and South Africa have volunteered to take part in clinical trials for a drug that\u2019s showed early promise.<\/p>\n

Both Webber and his longtime producer Cameron Mackintosh have decried London\u2019s theater shutdown and what they say is the government\u2019s weak response to assist the industry. Last month, Mackintosh said in a column he wrote for the UK\u2019s Evening Standard, \u201cWith no endgame<\/a> to this crisis in sight, last week I had to follow through with the awful, distressing downsizing of my organization to ensure my company\u2019s survival \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The London and UK touring productions of \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera,\u201d Mackintosh wrote, are \u201cpermanently shut down,\u201d though he later backtracked a bit. Webber responded to Mackintosh\u2019s column by tweeting, \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned \u2018Phantom\u2019 will reopen as soon as is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

As with Broadway, London\u2019s theaters have been closed since March due to the pandemic. While Broadway is officially closed until January \u2013 with shutdown extensions possible and no shows currently planning to return before Spring 2021 \u2013 some London theaters are considering a phased reopening beginning this Fall, with reduced audience capacities. London\u2019s\u00a0Bridge Theatre recently announced a production of David Hare\u2019s new one-man play \u201cBeat the Devil,\u201d starring Ralph Fiennes, with a target opening night in September or October.<\/p>\n
