Seth MacFarlane<\/strong> is going to be more than the comedy guy. The creator of\u00a0Family Guy<\/em> and\u00a0The Orville<\/em> is shifting gears to develop his first fully dramatic project,\u00a0The Winds of War<\/em><\/strong>. An epic period drama,\u00a0The Winds of War<\/em> is a limited series<\/a> based on\u00a0on Herman Wouk\u2019s\u00a0novel of the same name as well as his\u00a0War and Remembrance<\/em>, which\u00a0MacFarlane is set to write and executive produce with\u00a0The Alienist<\/em> executive producer\u00a0Seth Fisher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news<\/a> that Seth MacFarlane is developing a limited drama series with The Alienist<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0Seth Fisher under the working title\u00a0The Winds of War<\/em>, based on\u00a0Herman Wouk\u2019s period drama novels. Described as an \u201cepic story of one American family\u2019s turbulent voyage across the continents and across the years that spanned the Second World War,\u201d\u00a0The Winds of War<\/em> will be MacFarlane\u2019s first fully dramatic project and the first step in the \u201cnext phase of his career,\u201d according to\u00a0Dawn Olmstead, president of Universal Content Productions, the studio behind the drama.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to announce\u00a0The Winds of War<\/em>\u00a0(and\u00a0War and Remembrance<\/em>) as the first of many projects we are developing with Fuzzy Door. This is an epic story of valor, perseverance, survival and family that will be retold through a current lens,\u201d Olmstead said.<\/p>\n

The Winds of War<\/em> is the first project under MacFarlane\u2019s\u00a0$200 million\u00a0overall deal with NBCUniversal set up earlier this year after MacFarlane left his longtime home at\u00a020th Century Fox Television after more than two decades. MacFarlane and Fisher will executive produce with Fuzzy Door\u2019s Erica Huggins. Rachel Hargreaves-Heald is the executive in charge for Fuzzy Door. MacFarlane said in a statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t think of a more exciting project with which to launch my creative partnership with UCP than Herman Wouk\u2019s\u00a0The Winds of War.<\/em>\u00a0I\u2019ve been a devoted fan of Wouk\u2019s WWII epic for decades, and its depiction of small-scale human endurance in the face of large-scale global upheaval has never been more relevant than it is today. In my very first meeting with Dawn Olmstead, we connected over this project \u2014 I learned that she herself comes from a Naval family \u2014 and to bring it to fruition under her stewardship and that of her UCP team will be a perfect fit for all. We can\u2019t wait to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s certainly outside of the box for MacFarlane, though his Fox sci-fi comedy\u00a0The Orville<\/em>\u00a0may have been a sign of new things to come, as the series app<\/a>arently struck a more dramatic tone than comedic (to\u00a0mixed results). But good on MacFarlane for getting out of his comfort zone and becoming more than the guy behind Family Guy<\/em> and\u00a0who made for a really awkward Oscars host.<\/p>\n
