A digital twin is more than just a computer model, however. It receives data from sensors in the real system to constantly parallel the system\u2019s state.<\/p>\n<p>A digital twin helps people analyze and predict a system\u2019s behavior under different conditions. The systems being twinned are typically <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1109\/PerCom53586.2022.9762405\">very complex and require significant effort to model and track<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Digital twins are useful in a wide variety of domains, including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11036-020-01557-9\">supply chains<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.3233\/FAIA190139\">health care<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrae.org\/File%20Library\/Conferences\/Specialty%20Conferences\/2018%20Building%20Performance%20Analysis%20Conference%20and%20SimBuild\/Papers\/C110.pdf\">buildings<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.its.ucla.edu\/project\/digital-twins-for-bridge-health-monitoring-management\/\">bridges<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-stuttgart.de\/en\/university\/news\/all\/Digital-twin-for-autonomous-driving\/\">self-driving cars<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futureofretail.io\/trends\/digital-twins\">retail customer personas<\/a> to improve efficiency and reliability. For example, a warehouse operator can optimize a warehouse\u2019s performance by exploring the response of its digital twin to various material handling policies and equipment without incurring the cost of making actual changes.<\/p>\n<p>Even a wildfire can be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1109\/ICUFN.2019.8806107\">represented by a digital twin<\/a>. Government agencies can predict the spread of the fire and its impact under different conditions such as wind velocity, humidity and proximity to habitats, and use this information to guide evacuations.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_digital_twins_matter\"><\/span>Why digital twins matter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Digital twins are often used to model, understand and analyze complex systems where performance, reliability and security of the system are critical. In such systems it is paramount to test any changes, whether planned or unplanned.<\/p>\n<p>In order to accurately test changes to the state of the actual system and the effects of any possible stimulus, the digital twin must accurately represent the physical system in its current state. Collecting and processing this data requires advanced communication and computing technologies. Communication support typically involves high-speed internet connections and wireless networks such as Wi-Fi and 5G. Computational support is typically in the form of servers, either in the cloud or closer to the physical system.<\/p>\n<p>We and other faculty members at Rochester Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> and the University of California, Irvine are starting the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/cssr\">Center for Smart Spaces Research<\/a>, a research center sponsored by the National <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Foundation.
