During an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance on <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2022\/06\/02\/russ-record-labels-will-die-when-lazy-artists-stop-signing-contracts\/\">TMZ Live<\/a><\/em> on Thursday (June 2), the veteran indie rapper shared his candid thoughts on the major label system, a jig he believes will soon be up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think at some point [major labels] will become obsolete, just because the juice isn\u2019t worth the squeeze,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t need them; they\u2019re not doing anything for you that you can\u2019t do for yourself. I just think that some artists are not very business-minded and they kinda just want to be the artist, so that\u2019s why they go the label approach so that they have a team that does everything for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you can get a team to do everything for you and still just be the artist without the label. Artists in today\u2019s day and age, they\u2019re their own digital marketing. I think digital marketing is one of the biggest facades in the music industry. You get with the label and they\u2019re like, \u2018Here\u2019s your digital team.\u2019 And it\u2019s like, \u2018What do y\u2019all do exactly?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fCNM4Dfinro\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fCNM4Dfinro<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When asked if major labels are \u201cscared to death\u201d of their long-term viability, Russ replied, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m great for their future. I think they have an opportunity to extremely change their business model and their deals to make it more artist-friendly, but I think that a lot of times they just don\u2019t care. They\u2019re greedy and they know there are some artists who will still take the bait, so unfortunately they\u2019ll be around for a little bit longer, I think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll you really need is consistent quality music and some sort of online presence where you\u2019re engaging with your fans on a consistent, authentic basis, and you\u2019ll be completely fine. All the other stuff \u2014 radio, PR \u2014 it\u2019s just to help amplify a little bit, but it\u2019s absolutely not necessary. I mean, I\u2019ve been doing big venues for a long time now and it wasn\u2019t because I had crazy PR or crazy radio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russ\u2019 gripes with major labels aren\u2019t simply an outsider\u2019s observations. In 2017 he signed a multi-million dollar deal with Columbia Records and released three albums on the label \u2014 <em>There\u2019s Really a Wolf<\/em>, <em>Zoo<\/em> and <em>Shake the Snow Globe<\/em> \u2014 before departing for the independent route three years later.<\/p>\n<p>While he admits that the deal was actually pretty favorable, there were other aspects to his Columbia experience that soured his attitude toward major labels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust giving other people money for things that I know I could do myself \u2014 that was the worst part,\u201d he said. \u201cI was in a good deal; they didn\u2019t own my masters, I could pretty much do whatever I wanted, drop whenever I wanted. But it just got to this point where it was like, I\u2019m pulling all the weight doing everything, I\u2019m the digital marketing, so why am I giving y\u2019all 50 percent of the profits when y\u2019all are not putting up 50 percent of the work? It just didn\u2019t make sense anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/share.tmz.com\/watch\/2022-06-02-060222-russ-1434730\/\" width=\"640\" height=\"335\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Aiming to be the change that he wants to see, Russ and his longtime business partner Bugus launched their own record label DIEMON (short for Do It Everyday Music or Nothing) in March, with a focus on creating a more \u201cartist-friendly\u201d environment. Bay Area rapper LaRussell and San Diego-bred TikTok star Ktlyn are the label\u2019s first two signings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone owns their masters; everyone owns their publishing,\u201d he explained of the venture. \u201cWe don\u2019t eat on your merch or your tours, and everything\u2019s a profit split deal. We\u2019re not looking to invest in an artist just to change their music.
