Cynically claiming to cherish \u201csafe and thriving communities,\u201d he advocates the same policies that brought New York to its knees and gave criminals the whip hand over peaceful, law-abiding people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As violent crime soars across the city, Williams \u2014 along with others on the hard left \u2014 redefines \u201csafety\u201d to mean nearly anything but freedom from fear of getting stabbed, shoved or shot in another \u201crandom\u201d incident. <\/p>\n<p>Williams\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JumaaneWilliams\/status\/1531787433750167552\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday that \u201ctrue public safety comes when communities have what they need to thrive. Public safety is safe housing, good health care, childcare, reliable transportation, and living-wage jobs \u2014 not over policing, arrests, incarceration, and surveillance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This reinterpretation of what it means to feel \u201csafe\u201d just inverts the standard definition of the word for ideological ends. \u201cSafety\u201d no longer means getting criminals off the streets \u2014 it means fulfilling the same wish list that progressives always demand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-861.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"bullet holes\" class=\"wp-image-22516114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-861.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-861.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-861.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>\u201cSafety\u201d means nearly anything but freedom from fear of getting stabbed, shoved or shot in another \u201crandom\u201d incident.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">James Keivom<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Someone got shot on the subway? We need more funding for the New York City Housing Authority! A teenager was stabbed in a juice store? Let\u2019s unionize daycare workers! A woman was raped in a Bronx park? More funding for libraries, now!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a useful rule: When someone offers the same answer no matter what question you ask, he has an agenda that has nothing to do with the issue at hand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Williams and his cohort are defining public safety down. They see violent crime as a feature of urban life and the effective solution \u2014 \u201carrests, incarceration, and surveillance\u201d \u2014 as a cure that\u2019s worse than the disease. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made this point in her characteristically clumsy way in July 2020 when she blamed rising crime on the fact that criminals \u201cneed to feed their child, and they don\u2019t have money so . . . they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is like saying people only jump the turnstile because they need to get to their third job after attending their second church service of the day. If there\u2019s a rash of needy parents stealing bread to feed their starving children, I\u2019d like to hear about it, but in the meantime, there\u2019s little evidence that people commit violent crime \u2014 or shoplift from upscale Soho boutiques \u2014 out of anything resembling real need.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Williams, meanwhile,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JCAndersonNYC\/status\/1522314721189314564\">gaslights<\/a>\u00a0New Yorkers, telling them to ignore the evidence of their own eyes. \u201cFolks want to be safe, and they want to feel safe,\u201d he explained last month. \u201cSometimes they are safe but don\u2019t feel safe, and that could be just as dangerous in pushing policies that harm people.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-863.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Police investigate\" class=\"wp-image-22516115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-863.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-863.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/barron-crime-863.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>New York residents want solutions to the rising crime rates, that continue to harm innocent people.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Got that? If you don\u2019t feel safe on the subway \u2014 where 18 people have been murdered in two years \u2014 you\u2019re wrong and should ignore your own senses. The \u201cdangerous\u201d problem, he safesplains, is that when people underestimate how safe they really are, they may demand action that \u201charms people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Like what? You know \u2014 arresting criminals and sending them to jail. Letting cops do their job. Tracking gang members. Responding to calls for help from law-abiding residents whose buildings, streets and parks have been turned into 24-hour crime scenes. All the traditional methods that made New York City safe and prosperous but which Williams and his allies see as Gestapo tactics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No figure in public life has made such an effort to destroy public safety in New York City as Jumaane Williams. From scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing with police at protests to promoting legislation designed to put policing in deep freeze, he has built his career on making the city more dangerous. Which is why it is so richly ironic that Williams lives inside Brooklyn\u2019s Fort Hamilton, a gated army base guarded by soldiers armed with machine guns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Williams never has to concern himself with drug dealers, deranged homeless people or vandals in his neighborhood. They can\u2019t get in. Try protesting outside the public advocate\u2019s house \u2014 as he has done outside his opponents\u2019 houses many times \u2014 and see what the soldiers at the gate say. Per the base\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.army.mil\/hamilton\/index.php\/about\/visitor-information\">website<\/a>, \u201call visitors and uncleared contractors desiring access to Fort Hamilton must be vetted through the National Crime Information Center Interstate Identification Index.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sounds cozy \u2014\u00a0for him. This rank hypocrisy on public safety is pure chutzpah.
