The taxi service is restricted to selected San Francisco streets. It can operate only at a maximum speed of 30mph (48 kmph), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. It cannot offer paid rides during heavy rain, heavy fog, heavy smoke, hail, sleet, or snow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_Cruise_robotaxi_parties_allowed\"><\/span><strong>No Cruise robotaxi parties allowed\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Cruise can\u2019t offer shared rides between passengers from different parties at this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company must prepare a report and presentation updating stakeholders on how the strategies in its Passenger Safety Plan are operationalized in deployment. For example, reporting during safety during pickup and drop-off events, as part of a future CPUC workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a massive milestone for the commercial acceleration of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autonomous vehicle deployment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in US cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_status_of_robotaxis_in_the_wild\"><\/span><strong>What is the status of robotaxis in the wild?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, competitor Waymo\u2019s co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/05\/18\/waymo-is-expanding-its-driverless-program-in-phoenix\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAAHRbLFNiSKrQ_1K3RdjJJm8TXj2FKUkPJzsah1-7C4uTN1wXvIrF5SudNcpqAnNNutz0iqbvYBeoD8NOoTyuEh6GWYfBnvGxjaxnzRv-nZbDpGfCE4JdPAE33l1-qgsqPGaxLIrQzdTxOsEPwa-bH9Mp06RQuzb0L-x49D4VfQE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the company was removing human safety drivers from its robotaxi operations in downtown Phoenix. He stated at a TechCrunch event:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe will be starting fully autonomous, rider-only operations in the downtown Phoenix area that will\u2026be on the fifth generation of our system on the Jaguar I-PACEs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the company is curently focused on testing using employees, and people enrolled in the free-ride trusted tester program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In China, Baidu and Pony.ai have <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.markettradingessentials.com\/2021\/11\/baidu-kicks-off-its-robotaxi-business-after-getting-the-ok-to-charge-fees-in-beijing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been collecting fares<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Beijing\u2019s suburban district of Yizhuang since November 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the companies only received their taxi <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/24\/ponyai-says-its-first-self-driving-firm-to-get-taxi-license-in-china.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in April this year \u2014- the first companies in China to do so. This requires a two-year trial with no safety incidents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/other\/baidu-and-pony-ai-become-first-robotaxi-services-to-operate-without-safety-drivers-in-beijing\/ar-AAWMORY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they have been driving without a safety driver since last month, although a safety supervisor must be present in the vehicle at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruise\u2019s permit is a huge boon for the company. It has gone from strength to strength since it began welcoming members of the public to use the service for free in February this year.
