“#Meet the 14-year-old boy makeup artist with a CW docuseries<\/a><\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Welsh teen Reuben de Maid, the star of \u201cBeing Reuben,\u201d isn\u2019t your typical makeup artist\/ influencer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started [around age 9 or 10], I never really thought anything of it,\u201d de Maid, 14, tells The Post. \u201cLooking back now, I was a bit naive\u2026When people started saying stuff to me or being negative online, I realized [being interested in makeup] was different.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you know what? Everyone has something different about them,\u201d he says. \u201cI just embraced it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing Reuben,\u201d airing Fridays at 9 p.m. on The CW, follows de Maid as he balances his home life and regular teen activities (school and family time) with his budding career as a makeup influencer. He currently has over 285,000 Instagram followers and over 233,000 subscribers to his YouTube<\/a> channel, where he posts makeup tutorials.<\/p>\n

His social media presence landed him on \u201cThe Ellen DeGeneres Show\u201d in 2017, on a segment with Kim Kardashian. From there, his profile has risen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an interesting dynamic, being a 14-year-old boy flying off to LA to do these crazy makeup shows or things like \u2018The Ellen Show,\u2019 which is insane,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd then going back to Cardiff in the UK and living a really normal life with three siblings in the house and going to school and things like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [\u2018Being Reuben\u2019] is quite interesting to watch whether you\u2019re a kid or a parent or grandma \u2014 it just shows the family dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Maid\u2019s family consists of younger sister Coco, who loves fashion; younger brother Sonny, who wants to be a professional soccer player when he grows up; single mom Vicky, who de Maid describes as \u201cWonder Woman\u201d; and his grandfather, who the family calls \u201cBampa.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t hard to convince them to app<\/a>ear onscreen alongside him on the series, he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve all been really supportive of me through everything I\u2019ve done, which I\u2019m really lucky and grateful for,\u201d he says. \u201cWe had a lot of fun filming it. I think it brought us closer, spending more time together.\u201d<\/p>\n

One episode of \u201cBeing Reuben\u201d follows the family as Bampa takes the kids camping in the countryside sans phones, in an effort to get them to \u201cdetox\u201d from social media. Another episode shows de Maid taking his first trip<\/a> to New York City, to rub elbows with influential people in the makeup world. His aspiration is to one day have his own makeup company and brand, he says.<\/p>\n

In his native Wales, he\u2019s had the same group of school friends since he was 5 years old. They\u2019ve been nonchalant about both his penchant for makeup and about his rising fame.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friends have always known me as me\u2026and they don\u2019t think anything of it,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m so glad. When I go back to school I\u2019m the normal me again. Society is changing for the good \u2014 people are becoming more accepting, more aware. This not just a girl thing \u2014 it doesn\u2019t say \u2018for girls\u2019 on the [makeup] package.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even with his family and friends\u2019 acceptance, though, he\u2019s still experienced some bullying. But thanks to his mom\u2019s advice, he\u2019s been able to navigate that hurdle.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mum says, \u2018Be yourself because everyone else is taken,\u2019 and that\u2019s what I\u2019ve always stuck by,\u201d he says. \u201cShe\u2019s also told me that people will have something to say. Before I came into the public eye a bit more, she did warn me \u2018Not everyone will agree with you.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the start, I had a thin skin and got offended quite a lot,\u201d he says. \u201cBut now, having those negative comments has made me a stronger person.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
