From the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2022\/06\/02\/doug-ford-trounces-the-competition-as-steven-del-duca-and-andrea-horwath-resign-as-party-leaders.html\"><em>Star:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">With the landslide win, the Conservatives exceeded their 2018 seat count in the legislature despite two years of COVID-19 that left 13,311 Ontarians dead and soaring inflation as the economy rebounds from the pandemic. The Tories, who held 67 ridings at dissolution on May 4, were leading or had won 82 of the 124 seats in the house with incomplete returns and much lower voter turnout than the 57 per cent of 2018. The New Democrats were ahead or had won 29 seats to eight for the Liberals and one Green. There were four ridings outstanding as of press time. \u201cWe\u2019re reimagining our party \u2026 and tonight, we have changed what it means to be a Progressive Conservative in Ontario,\u201d Ford told cheering supporters at the Toronto Congress Centre in his Etobicoke North riding.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Exit Del Duca: <\/strong>Liberal leader <strong>Steven Del Duca<\/strong> resigned as leader after failing to win a seat in the legislature and delivering dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing results across Ontario, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-election-gta-results-1.6475809\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exit Horwath<\/strong>: NDP leader <strong>Andrea Horwath<\/strong>, who\u2019s been at the helm of her party through four elections, secured her seat but also announced she would be resigning as leader, the <em>Spectator<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/provincial-election\/2022\/06\/02\/ndp-leader-andrea-horwath-wins-hamilton-centre-for-fifth-straight-election.html\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\"><strong>Ford\u2019s night:<\/strong> In the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Martin Regg Cohn<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2022\/06\/02\/how-doug-ford-won-in-a-landslide-and-why-his-rivals-fell-flat.html\">writes<\/a> that Ford earned this victory, unlike the last one, which he won almost by default. This time, he \u201cpersuaded voters that\u00a0<em>he personally<\/em>\u00a0had changed enough to get a second chance \u2014 after hitting bottom in the middle of his first term. Instead of a change\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/thestar.com\/politics\/ontario-election\/results\">election<\/a>, Ford won re-election in a landslide. More to the point, his NDP and Liberal opponents lost decisively, massively \u2014 with Ford as the last leader still standing, and still on the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bulldozer triumphs:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Marcus Gee<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-doug-ford-ontario-election-progressive-conservative\/\">makes similar points<\/a>. Ford, who once seemed like a clumsy political bulldozer,\u00a0earned this victory fair and squre, although he was lucky to face weak opponents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>True Blue collars:<\/strong> In the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>Ben Woodfinden<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/ontario-election\/ben-woodfinden-doug-fords-blue-collar-election-victory-could-reshape-conservatism\">points to<\/a> the decisive role played by\u00a0Labour Minister Monte McNaughton, who helped\u00a0build relationships with trade unions that cemented Ford\u2019s victory, pointing the way to a potent new blue-collar conservatism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Victory lap:<\/strong> At CTV, <strong>Don Martin<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/don-martin-s-blog\/don-martin-a-basic-doug-ford-takes-a-middle-of-the-road-victory-lap-in-ontario-election-1.5930741\">writes<\/a> that the result offers a lesson to federal Conservatives as they shop for a new leader \u2014 offer pablum.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Voters in Ontario were not screaming for Conservative policy comfort food like fiscal austerity, smaller bureaucracies, deficit elimination or tax cuts, so Ford delivered mushy political pablum and free motor vehicle registration. Ford simply put his PC party label into middle ground practice: Not too progressive. Not too conservative.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s doubtful, if not laughable, to suggest that Doug Ford is on track to match the iconic status of Ontario\u2019s Bill Davis, New Brunswick\u2019s Frank McKenna or Alberta\u2019s Peter Lougheed. He\u2019s more like an Ontario answer to Alberta\u2019s common-touch premier Ralph Klein.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong>, who didn\u2019t do much to help his provincial cousins, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MariekeWalsh\/status\/1532564346164940801?s=20&amp;t=JJHFsjvB_T8cCsc7h0Q63Q\">congratulated Ford<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responds to Morneau:<\/strong>\u00a0Earlier Thursday, in his own lane,<strong> Trudeau<\/strong> responded Thursday to Wednesday\u2019s <strong>Bill Morneau<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-morneau-criticizes-liberals-economic-policies-in-first-public-speech\/\">speech<\/a>, in which the former finance minister said the Liberals have been putting too much emphasis on wealth redistribution and not enough on wealth creation, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-trudeau-defends-economic-agenda-after-strong-critique-from-former\/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+\/+Media&amp;utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links\">reports<\/a>. Trudeau said Morneau was part of all that: \u201cBill was a huge part of that \u2013 an important member of the team. We did that, not just because that was going to be the best way through the pandemic, but it was the best way of ensuring the economy would come back as quickly and strongly as possible\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not a dissident:<\/strong> Writing in the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>John Ivison<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/john-ivison-bill-morneaus-damning-indictment-of-liberal-spending-is-a-bit-rich\">sees<\/a>\u00a0this more or less as Trudeau does.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this week\u2019s speech, Morneau said he tried to get his government to focus on the need for sustained economic growth but was often foiled by the emergence of \u201cthings that seemed more politically urgent, even when they weren\u2019t truly as important.\u201d But he was hardly a dissident. He was in charge of economic policy \u2014 and if he wasn\u2019t, he should have resigned sooner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Too tough on Trump:<\/strong> On Thursday, <em>Politico<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/06\/02\/more-from-morneau-canada-shouldnt-have-used-trump-as-punching-bag-00036807\">unearthed<\/a> an overlooked Feb. 25 speech, in Washington, in which Morneau criticized the Trudeau government\u2019s approach to dealing with our neighbours:\u00a0 \u201cWe were, in Canada, reflecting the reality that most Canadians didn\u2019t support Trump. So it was easy to use Trump as a punching bag in Canada. And I would argue not a very smart thing for Canadians to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accountable:<\/strong> The deputy governor of the Bank of Canada said Thursday that the bank should be \u201cheld accountable\u201d for its failure to keep inflation under control, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/bank-of-canada-inflation-poilievre-1.6475515\">reports<\/a>. <strong>Paul Beaudry<\/strong> was responding to Pierre Poilievre\u2019s criticisms. \u201cThe aspect that we should be held accountable is exactly right,\u201d Beaudry said. \u201cRight now we completely understand that lots of Canadians can be frustrated at the situation. It\u2019s difficult for a lot of people. And we haven\u2019t managed to keep inflation at our target, so it\u2019s appropriate people are asking us questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>CERB clawback:<\/strong> Two years after doling out $2,000-per-month CERB cheques to those who lost work due to the pandemic, Ottawa is sending\u00a0letters to thousands of Canadians, telling them that they needed to pay at least some of the money back, CTV\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/shocked-then-angry-the-stories-of-canadians-who-have-to-repay-cerb-1.5929985\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No request:<\/strong> Former Ottawa police chief <strong>Peter Sloly<\/strong> told MPs Thursday he didn\u2019t ask the Liberal government for invocation of the Emergencies Act to clear the city\u2019s streets, the Post <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/former-ottawa-police-chief-peter-sloly-says-he-didnt-ask-liberals-for-emergencies-act\">reports<\/a>: \u201cI did not make that request, I\u2019m not aware of anybody else in the Ottawa Police Service who did.\u201d RCMP commissioner Brenda Lucki previously said the same, contradicting claims by Trudeau government ministers at the time of the protest that police told them they needed the extra powers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Stephen Maher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"under-article-widget-nl\">\n<p class=\"under-article-widget-title\">Looking for more?<\/p>\n<p class=\"under-article-widget-description\">Get the best of <em>Maclean<\/em>&#8216;s sent straight to your inbox.
