Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that unpacks the cinematographic style of Ari Wegner.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>One of the most exciting cinematographers working today, Australian-born <strong>Ari Wegner<\/strong>\u2018s name may sound familiar to you if you tuned in to this year\u2019s Academy Awards race. Her stunning (awards-deserving!) work on Jane Campion\u2019s Western drama <em>The Power of the Dog\u00a0<\/em>was nominated for a cinematography Oscar. And in the timeline in my head she won (apologies to real-life winner, Greig Fraser).<\/p>\n<p>That said, even if you\u2019re <em>not<\/em> familiar with her name, there\u2019s a good chance that if you\u2019ve found your way to this article you\u2019re at the very least familiar with Wegner\u2019s work. Her deft hand and ecclectic style can be found in the claustrophobic frames of\u00a0 the 2016 film <strong><em>Lady Macbeth<\/em><\/strong>; the vivid, <em>giallo<\/em> indebted vision of Peter Strickland\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>In Fabric<\/em><\/strong>; the austere landscapes of Van Diemen\u2019s Land in <strong><em>True History of the Kelly Gang<\/em><\/strong>, and more recently, the grainy funhouse mirror of <strong style=\"font-style: italic;\">Zola<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Like many incredible cinematographers before her, the thread uniting Wegner\u2019s work is an adaptability to suit a film\u2019s visual look to the story it\u2019s trying to tell. As the video essay below testifies, her diverse toolkit and keen ability to shift and accommodate a story\u2019s visual needs make her a cinematographer well-worth knowing.
