\n President Trump said Wednesday that distancing learning for children \u201cis not the answer\u201d and that schools must reopen in the fall.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is interesting because one thing we\u2019ve learned during this horror show of the China plague is that virtual is not as good as being there \u2014 virtual is just not the same thing,\u201d Trump said during an afternoon gathering at the White House that promoted school reopening despite the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Trump administration health officials last month outlined recommended best practices for reopening schools, including \u201ccohorting\u201d of students to prevent spread of COVID-19. Administration officials argue that children are less susceptible to the virus, though Trump urged elderly teachers to stay home.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a long time we\u2019ve been hearing how great it would be how great it would be,\u201d Trump said of distance learning. \u201cWell, we\u2019ve had the ultimate sample right, namely the whole country, practically, and it\u2019s not as good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve also learned that tele health is very good. Telehealth is up 3,500%,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the virtual learning is not like being in the classroom, and we\u2019ve learned that I think very strongly in almost all cases. People thought for a long time that would be the answer, but it\u2019s that\u2019s not the answer. The answer is an old-fashioned one is better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speakers at the White House event included Richard Corcoran, commissioner of the Florida Department of Education, who said that in school districts that opened this week there\u2019s \u201calmost 100 percent teacher participation\u201d and that 70 percent in-person participation is anticipated among students.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
