\n Guess what: Mayor Bill de Blasio is actually standing up for kids, despite incessant whines from the teachers and principals unions set on delaying in-person school reopenings. Kudos, Mr. Mayor.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, principals\u2019 union boss Mark Cannizzaro conveyed \u201cdire warnings\u201d to the mayor about the city\u2019s plan to open schools Sept. 10. A group of Brooklyn principals similarly said they were \u201cgravely concerned\u201d about the plan and that it\u2019s becoming \u201cclear\u201d that \u201cschools cannot open.\u201d<\/p>\n

United Federation of Teachers head Michael Mulgrew, who\u2019s already threatened a strike and\/or lawsuit, had to chime in, too: \u201cWill any parents be willing to put their children in a school whose principal believes the building is not ready to open because it is not safe?\u201d he snarked.<\/p>\n

Please. No one wants to put kids in unsafe schools \u2014 and no one intends to.<\/p>\n

For starters, many parents have opted to have their kids stick with remote learning and to keep them out of schools entirely. Those who do go will only attend part-time, with online instruction the rest of the time. So school buildings will have far fewer students, allowing significant social<\/a>-distancing.<\/p>\n

And remember, groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics say the benefits of in-person school outweigh the risks from the virus \u2014 i.e., that keeping kids home can actually be worse for them. Kids are usually not at great risk from COVID-19.<\/p>\n

School staff can also get medical exemptions if they have serious issues.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t doubt that the unions have some legitimate gripes and that they lack sufficient \u201cinformation and guidance\u201d at this point. It should surprise no one that the usually inept Department of Education still has some big issues to resolve.<\/p>\n

Yet, to his credit, de Blasio put the complaints in perspective: \u201cUnions will always sound various alarms, and unions will say things sometimes in a very dramatic fashion,\u201d said the mayor. But \u201cthe mission is to take care of our kids.\u201d Hear, hear.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, he says DOE is \u201csystematically addressing\u201d the unions\u2019 concerns.<\/p>\n

Standing up to unions, of course, is highly unusual for de Blasio. It seems this time he understands what\u2019s on the line for kids \u2014 not to mention parents who need their children in school while they work.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a parent .\u2009.\u2009.\u2002I would say my kids are not going to get educated if they are all remote. It just won\u2019t be as good.\u201d And given all the precautions, he added, \u201cI would send my [own] kid to school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notably, de Blasio is one of the few big-city mayors to allow any kind of in-person classes this fall. So his refusal to throw in the towel is doubly commendable.<\/p>\n

Again, the onus is on DOE \u2014 with, one hopes, the cooperation of the unions \u2014 to find a way to make in-person classes work.<\/p>\n

But the mayor insists: \u201cWe\u2019re gonna make it work.\u201d Finally, kids may catch a break.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
