We are firing on all cylinders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller added that the city is \u201crounding seven weeks of steady decline in shootings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an accident; that is the result of a strategy,\u201d he continued, explaining that the NYPD \u201cflooded the Bronx with cops\u201d after a spate of shootings in the borough and \u201cintensified\u201d presence of Strategic Response Team members there.<\/p>\n<p>According to figures released Friday, the NYPD recorded 118 shootings in May \u2014 down from 172 in 2021. But last month\u2019s tally was significantly higher than the 61 shootings reported in May 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the radio show hosts, Miller, the deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism, noted that police are tasked with balancing public perception of safety and what actual crime stats are showing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/shooting-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Police at the scene of a shooting on May 28. \" class=\"wp-image-22540903\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/shooting-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/shooting-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/shooting-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Police at the scene of a shooting on May 28. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard, because there\u2019s a difference \u2026 between how safe people are, and how safe they feel they are. And the things that make people feel less safe are not really necessarily violent crime,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the confrontational person you will see on the street or in the subway; it\u2019s the signs of disorder out on the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what we\u2019re trying to do is attack that on all fronts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over 2,500 more index crimes \u2014 including larcenies, robberies and car break-ins \u2014 were reported in May compared to May 2019, according to the new statistics. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, grand larcenies rose by more than 42% compared to last year, 4,116 vs. 2,897, while robberies were up 26.2% and burglaries increased by 28.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Miller also took aim at progressive criminal justice reform, saying it\u2019s created \u201climited consequences\u201d for certain crimes that embolden repeat offenders \u2014 echoing sentiments expressed by\u00a0NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell\u00a0and\u00a0Mayor Eric Adams.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/subway-shooting.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"An NYPD transit officer from the anti-terrorism unit patrols a subway station on May 24. \" class=\"wp-image-22540970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/subway-shooting.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/subway-shooting.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/subway-shooting.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>An NYPD transit officer from the anti-terrorism unit patrols a subway station on May 24. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Mary Altaffer\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThese are crimes that are largely not bail eligible now,\u201d he said. \u201cIf somebody comes in and steals from the same store every day, and walks out and we catch him every day, the judge has no ability to hold him [even if] they know that crime is going to happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the 2019 bail-reform law, judges were barred from setting bail in misdemeanor and many non-violent felony cases. In April, Gov. Brad Hoylman and Jamaal Bailey and passed by the state Senate last month but not yet signed into law \u2014 would change state criminal procedure regulations in order to bar prosecutors from using artists\u2019 \u201ccreative or artistic expression\u201d against them unless they provide \u201cclear and convincing proof\u201d of a direct connection between the work and the alleged crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get the idea of protecting art,\u201d Miller said, \u201cbut in a city where we have gangs who are using drill rap to call each other out and those things are actually resulting in shootings and murders and shooting kids, I\u2019m just not sure that that is the most useful legislative approach to make that problem better.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
