Kathy Hochul had the state shell out $2 million to provide herself a spacious state-of-the-art executive office in a Buffalo building whose landlord\u00a0is a big campaign contributor, according to documents obtained by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s ramped-up new digs in her hometown include access\u00a0to a\u00a0balcony, a snazzy mural called \u201cGo!\u201d painted on one side of the building and a rooftop garden, published reports have said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she became governor, she ordered that her office be made bigger by taking down a wall and that she be given access to a balcony,\u201d said a source familiar with the office expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The extensive renovations on the fifth\u00a0floor of the mixed-use building at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/savarinocompanies.com\/projects\/cobblestone-lofts-2\/\">95 Perry St. <\/a>in Buffalo\u2019s historic Cobblestone District began shortly after\u00a0Hochul replaced tarnished Andrew Cuomo as governor in August and continued through this past April, records show.<\/p>\n<p>She is heavily favored to win the Democratic primary on June\u00a028 and face off against a Republican in five months.<\/p>\n<p>Developer Samuel Savarino of Savino Companies \u2014 who built, owns and manages the renovated warehouse \u2014 has donated $62,500 to Hochul\u2019s campaign kitty. Kathy Hochul\u2019s building renovations are for security purposes.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Matthew McDermott<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hochul, who was born and bred in Buffalo and lives there, used the same building for a much smaller office when she was lieutenant governor,\u00a0sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Her public schedule since becoming governor shows she has spent about 12 days in Buffalo, mainly in aftermath of the horrific shooting massacre there last month.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Cuomo nor his gubernatorial predecessor, George Pataki, had a third office in addition to the ones they had in the state Capitol building in Albany and the governor\u2019s traditional New York City office on Third Avenue in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Critics slammed the under-the-radar spending for Hochul\u2019s new digs while also noting the building owner\u2019s contributions to her political war chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt absolutely reeks and should be investigated,\u201d state Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy seethed to The Post of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi, one of Hochul\u2019s opponents in the upcoming June 28 Democratic primary, also blasted the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[She] has reneged on her promise that an \u2018ethical government would be a hallmark\u2019 of her administration,\u201d Suozzi said. <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cexecutive chamber renovation\u201d project was paid by the Empire State Development Corp., the chief state leaseholder for office space in the building.<\/p>\n<p>A breakdown of the spending on the renovations at the leased building includes: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$413,793 for electrical work<\/li>\n<li>$362,400 for architectural and engineering work<\/li>\n<li>$240,349 for doors and frames<\/li>\n<li>$179,689 to landlord\/<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> contractor Savarino Companies for supervision, cleaning, providing temporary facilities<\/li>\n<li>$172,955 for finishes;<\/li>\n<li>$137,309 for heat, ventilation and air conditioning and $118,745 for specialty construction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The spending also includes\u00a0 $67,820 for demolition and debris removal; $1,380 for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>liances; $17,595 for furnishings; $88,317 for fire suppression; $20,700 for plumbing;\u00a0 $67,289 for communications; $15,000 for electrical safety and security; $10,925 for exterior improvements and $18,143 for insurance.<\/p>\n<p>The total value or cost with change orders comes in at $2,002,831.42, according to invoices filed by the contractor and subcontractors.<\/p>\n<p>The Hochul administration claims the renovations and expansion were done mainly for security purposes,\u00a0not for \u201cconvenience or luxury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the safety and security of the Governor, renovations were made to one floor of a building that is leased by Empire State Development,\u201d ESD said in a statement. \u201cAll work was done in accordance with State Police requirements to ensure the well-being of the Governor when working in Western New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the ESD also said the renovations were done to accommodate the need for additional executive staff as well as security personnel, in addition to other security measures and upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>The agency added that the balcony has been a feature of the building since 2008, when the\u00a0economic\u00a0development agency first leased space there and that the offices located near it were not altered\u00a0to create greater access for the governor. It noted that the mural and rooftop garden already existed before the Hochul office renovations, too.<\/p>\n<p>The State Police also issued a statement saying it \u201cconducted a review of existing facilities and determined that changes were required to support the security needs of the Governor. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were not changes for convenience or luxury, but were vital upgrades to protect the safety and security of the Governor as deemed necessary by State Police,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of General Services, responsible for handling leases for state agencies, said in a separate statement that it is reimbursing ESD for the cost of renovations for upgrades \u201cnecessary for security reasons related to the Governor\u2019s occupancy.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
