When I was a part of it, it felt like home,\u201d he says. As a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada\u2014and, at 23, the youngest in its seven-decade history\u2014he\u2019s now worlds away from Zolani, the South African farming township where he grew up. There, November improvised to kwaito, a mash-up of house music and traditional beats that loosely translates to \u201chot-tempered.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">November quickly became known among locals as \u201cthe dancer,\u201d and the art form was a lifeline for him: poverty and racism were rampant in the community where he lived with his siblings and their mother, Sylvia, a cannery worker. \u201cI come from a place where you\u2019re faced with quite raw and real situations,\u201d he says. \u201cCommunicating that sadness helped me navigate who I was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>MORE:\u00a0Faouzia could be Gen Z\u2019s next big pop star<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">When November was 10, his talent caught the attention of a visiting Toronto family who had enrolled their daughter at a local dance academy. Captivated, they encouraged him to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly to Canada\u2019s National Ballet School. At 12, he was accepted on a full scholarship, leaving behind his siblings and his mom. \u201cIt was a feast of excitement,\u201d he says. \u201cThe homesickness came later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">At the school, November alchemized the hot temper of kwaito to propel his gravity-defying jumps and burn the rough edges off his classical positions. As in Zolani, he became a known quantity; the National Ballet even waived its usual apprenticeship period to give November a job im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely upon graduation. This month, he stars in Karen Kain\u2019s new adaptation of <i>Swan Lake<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">His technical prowess isn\u2019t the only thing that makes him a ballet outlier: his style is rooted in African tradition. With every performance, November butts up against deeply entrenched Eurocentrism. \u201cI\u2019m in an art form where everything is so objective. How do I make people look beyond that to be moved or have different conversations at the dinner table?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><i>Swan Lake <\/i>is a step onto the podium, but November also wants to choreograph\u2014<br \/>a talent he briefly flexed this spring with a piece called <i>On Solid Ground<\/i>. It\u2019s in choreography where he can showcase his versatility, where his sky-high legs and jumps can mix with the odd reflexive flourish of kwaito. \u201cIn any dance setting, I will never drown. I will always float,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s my superpower.\u201d <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"POP_QUIZ\"><\/span><b>POP QUIZ<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Pre-performance routine:<\/b> \u201cListening to an Afrobeats playlist.
