“#Jets can rally around revitalized, accountable Le\u2019Veon Bell<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A word of advice to every player on the Jets\u2019 2020 roster: Follow Le\u2019Veon Bell.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s one player on the Jets who had reason to come away from last season\u2019s disapp<\/a>ointment with excuses about why it went wrong, it was Bell, the seventh-year running back.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u200aHe hadn\u2019t played in a year, having sat out 2018 in a contract dispute with the Steelers.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u200aHe was playing for a new coach, Adam Gase, in a new system.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u200aHe ran behind an offensive line that used 11 different players and nine different starting combinations.<\/p>\n

conversation with reporters on Wednesday\u200aHe lost his starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, for three game<\/a>s to mononucleosis, rendering the offense non-competitive for nearly a month.<\/p>\n

Pick your excuse, any excuse. Bell won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Despite producing his worst numbers as a pro in 2019 \u2014 52.6 rushing yards per game, a 3.2-yard per carry and 4.0 yards per touch \u2014 Bell refused to hide behind excuses last year, and he\u2019ll have none of it this year.<\/p>\n

Bell on Wednesday, speaking to reporters for the first time since the end of last season, left this prevailing takeaway: His accountability is inspiring.<\/p>\n

That should permeate throughout the team\u2019s locker room and make the Jets a better team than the one that finished 7-9 last season. The Jets are a young team, and accountability is paramount. Bell\u2019s mere presence helps that.<\/p>\n

Bell, in his conversation with reporters on Wednesday, was equal parts revealing, transparent, emotional and \u2014 above all \u2014 accountable, neither offering nor accepting any excuses.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t nearly what I should have been. I understand maybe there were some runs when I didn\u2019t have a chance. But where were some runs when I had chances, and I didn\u2019t make the play. I can\u2019t let that duplicate this year. I can\u2019t let that happen.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Bell spent the offseason asking himself this question: \u201cHow much better can I be?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThe season I had last year, I felt like I left some yards out there,\u2019\u2019 Bell said. \u201cYou hear people talk like maybe it\u2019s the O-line or the coach not giving me the ball and it\u2019s like, no, there were holes there [and] coach Gase gave me the ball enough. There were times I could have done more with it. I don\u2019t want that to be a question no more.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Bell has been so stoked about his productive offseason that he\u2019s not been shy about posting a few Instagram videos showing the mad shape he\u2019s in. He said he reported to camp at between 210 and 215 pounds, the lightest he\u2019s been since he was playing high school ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year is going to be a lot different,\u2019\u2019 Bell promised. \u201cThe past six or seven years, I\u2019ve worked hard, and that\u2019s why I\u2019ve been successful. But I haven\u2019t worked nearly as hard as I\u2019ve worked the last 6\u200a\u00b9\/\u2082 months.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Upon his review of last season, Bell conceded that, as ready as he felt after taking 2018 off, he could have been more ready in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year when I was coming back off the year off, I feel like I was ready, I felt like I was on good shape for the season,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cEven when I was playing, I felt good. But sitting here now and when I look back on it, it\u2019s like. \u2018Dang, I wasn\u2019t even close to where I wanted to be.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI kind of got complacent in my head. I\u2019ve always had something to drive me to be great. When I was in college, I wanted to get to the NFL. When I was in the NFL, I wanted to get to be the best running back in the league. Then I started hearing, \u2018Le\u2019Veon, you\u2019re the best running back in the league.\u2019 It\u2019s not like I stopped working hard, but I didn\u2019t have that edge to me anymore, that chip.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Asked if he has more \u201cedge\u2019\u2019 now than he had last year, Bell said, \u201cIt\u2019s not even close.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year I\u2019m expecting a lot of myself, and I\u2019m ready to show everybody what I\u2019m able to do,\u2019\u2019 Bell said. \u201cI\u2019m ready to show that this is the best Le\u2019Veon Bell that\u2019s ever played in the NFL.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
