Panelists were asked if their companies were profitable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might surprise you to know that despite whopping masses of funding, only one out of four was generating a profit:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/xxufsq84dd?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u274c Lime was founded in 2017 in the US and received <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/limebike\/company_financials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.5B in funding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u274c Dott was founded in 2018 in the Netherlands and raised <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/dott\/company_financials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$210.8M<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u274c\u00a0 Sw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>able battery company <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/swobbee.de\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swobbee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was founded in 2017 in Germany and raised <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/swobbee\/company_financials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$6M<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a single investment from an energy company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2705 Tier Mobility was founded in 2018 in Germany, and has raised <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/search\/funding_rounds\/field\/organizations\/funding_total\/tier-mobility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$646.9M<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some perspective, European micromobility <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/news\/articles\/europe-leads-the-pack-for-2021s-micromobility-vc-deals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">startups raised over $778m<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in VC funding in 2021 \u2014 an increase of over 45% on the previous year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">Public<\/span> markets have shifted. Companies were once rewarded for high growth. For example, expanding fleets and markets. These include the number of vehicles sold, and \u2014 in the case of hire escooters and similar tech \u2013the number and frequency of rides.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Regulations\"><\/span><strong>Regulations <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More escooter brands on the streets mean a dilution of profits. In regards to regulations, low fleet caps (a limit to how many escooters you can roll out in any city) can result in low density and high operational costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia Yexley, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Manager at TIER Mobility, also raised the importance of regulation to lower the barriers of entry. She cited the example of cities that require a driver\u2019s license to operate a hire escooter, which excludes a chunk of the population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yexley notes that the company\u2019s presence in over 530 cities globally offers the company influence over the urban environment. But tech innovation is also a critical key to profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Evolution_makes_money\"><\/span><strong>Evolution makes money\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving the design and build of escooters is key to ensuring that the vehicles are operational as much as possible. According to Maxim Romain, co-founder and COO at Dott, escooters need to last as long as possible with the least repairs and lowest battery recharging costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, efficiency in recharging and maintenance operations impacts pricing and the amount of money you can make per ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, according to Ghassan Haddad \u2014 Head of Public Policy &amp; Communications, EMEA at Lime \u2014 the brand is one of the only companies that makes its own escooters and ebikes today. Its escooters in particular have evolved to have a lifespan of over five years, which helps with profitability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company also has interchangeable batteries and infrastructure. This means that fleets are easy to repair. It\u2019s April <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1788841\/000107997322000422\/helbiz_10k-123121.htm#item1a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEC filing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year included a statement from the company\u2019s auditor \u201cthat there is substantial doubt about [its]our ability to continue as a going concern.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financiers issue a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/g\/goingconcern.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going concern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when there\u2019s a worry that a company may run out of money. We saw this to be also the case with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EV startup Canoo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romain attributed several factors to their difficulties. He noted that the company\u2019s use of franchising made it challenging to control its operation efficiency directly. Helbiz had also outsourced their city tendering, \u201cmeaning they struggled to win city key tenders. As a result, they have to deal with smaller cities with smaller markets, or more competition in crowded cities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, doing operations in-house makes it easier to gain complete visibility of costs. This provides an alternative to other modes of transport. But a lack of public infrastructure and confusing road and parking rules can act as a deterrent to their use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micromobility operators work hard to build relationships with cities. This is critical to ensure smooth deployment. It\u2019s essential that money is spent on infrastructure, such as ride lanes and parking spaces, rather than operator subsidies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micromobility operators have focused on introduction and fleet expansion over the last few years. They have rapidly evolved in many cities\u2019 mobility landscapes.
