Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_Apps_Use_More_Data_Than_Others\"><\/span>Some Apps Use More Data Than Others<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cellular data is how your iPhone uses the internet when you\u2019re away from a Wi-Fi access point, such as out in public or in your car. Depending on your mobile plan, it\u2019s not always unlimited. So using a lot of cellular data can rack up hefty extra charges if you\u2019re not careful.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that\u2019s important to know is that not all apps are equal in how much data they use. Certain types of app usage, such as streaming video or music, use up a lot more data than messaging or checking email. That\u2019s because it takes more information to transmit video, images, and audio than simple text. Scroll down below that and you\u2019ll find a list of apps installed on your cell phone. They are sorted by how much cellular data they have been using, with heavy offenders at the top of the list. Each app displays its cellular data usage just below its name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-808006\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cell_data_1.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"You'll see the cellular data in use listed below the app's anme on iPhone Settings.\" width=\"650\" height=\"294\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The data you\u2019re seeing is from the \u201cCurrent Period,\u201d which on some cellular plans is tied to your actual cell phone billing cycle. On others, the \u201cCurrent Period\u201d is the length of time since the cellular data statistics were last reset. You can find that date down at the very bottom of the Cellular settings page.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-808033\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cellular_stats_last_reset.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"At the bottom of Cellular settings, you'll see the date the current period started.\" width=\"650\" height=\"358\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To reset the statistics for the current period, tap \u201cReset Statistics,\u201d located just above the \u201cLast Reset\u201d date. All the cellular data usage numbers listed for the apps above will reset to zero and begin counting up again until the next billing period (on some carriers) or until you manually reset the statistics again.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Can_I_Do_About_It\"><\/span>What Can I Do About It?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If an app is using too much cellular data, it\u2019s easy to block it from ever using cellular data at all. To do so, open Settings and navigate to \u201cCellular.\u201d Scroll down to the list of apps and flip the switch beside the app that\u2019s using too much cellular data into the off position.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-808007\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cell_data_2.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Flip the switch beside the app name to turn off Cellular Data for that app in iPhone Settings.\" width=\"650\" height=\"294\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>With cellular data turned off for that app, it will still work when your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, but when you\u2019re not\u2014and you\u2019re only connected to cellular data\u2014that app will not connect to the internet.<\/p>\n<p>You can also turn on Low Data mode to reduce some cellular data usage in Settings &gt; Cellular &gt; Cellular Data.
