They took an all-terrain vehicle off-road. With researchers on board, it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed through challenging situations such as driving through dense vegetation and puddles. It was put through the paces with aggressive driving up and down hills, at speeds of 30mph (48mph), and sharp turns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/wgAD7T6dKEE\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/xxufsq84dd?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers generated a dataset called <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2205.01791\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TartanDrive<\/span><\/a>. It consists <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of roughly 200,000 off-road driving interactions on a modified Yamaha Viking ATV. This included seven unique sensing modalities in diverse terrains. They believe this to be the largest real-world, multimodal, off-road driving dataset in terms of interactions and sensor\u00a0types.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future, automakers could use the data to train autonomous off-road vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most research focuses on urban environments. In a literature review, the researchers note that current off-ride driving sets tend to focus on understanding environmental features instead of the interplay between the robot and the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So this data provides a valuable resource for future research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_practical_use_cases_for_an_autonomous_all-terrain_vehicles\"><\/span><strong>What are the practical use cases for an autonomous all-terrain vehicles?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carnegie Mellon researchers aren\u2019t the only people focused on accelerating vehicle automation in all-terrain vehicles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s foreseeable that the military could deploy an autonomous all-terrain vehicle in warfare scenarios, or as part of a search and rescue mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably the best-known R&amp;D in the area is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DARPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and its <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DARPA_Grand_Challenge\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where teams raced off-road autonomous vehicles across rugged terrain in the Mojave desert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, DARPA is focusing on off-road simulation to accelerate vehicle testing further. Largeairless tires help the vehicle traverse obstacles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company is working with partners to beta-test and evaluate use cases in a large-scale solar operations company in North Carolina. A wildland firefighting division in Colorado is also testing the vehicle as well as an agricultural and environmental <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>s college in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s currently a conceptual vehicle, but the R&amp;D offers scope in the future for a commercial rollout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some respects, it\u2019s surprising that off-road autonomous ATVs haven\u2019t yet evolved further. After all, there\u2019s no need to follow road rules or speed limits. But developing training data is hard. It involves not only collecting data,\u00a0but developing the learning models required. There\u2019s a long way to go from research to commercial viability.
