He also suggests stricter rules to stop third-parties from receiving foreign funding and steps to protect against cybersecurity threats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MPs defect:<\/strong> Two CPC MPs switched from <strong>Patrick Brown<\/strong> to <strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong> on Tuesday, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/two-mps-defect-poilievre-1.6480338\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hamilton-area MP <strong>Dan Muys<\/strong> and MP <strong>Kyle Seeback<\/strong>, who represents neighbouring Dufferin-Caledon in the House of Commons, both announced Tuesday they\u2019re abandoning Brown for Poilievre. Their departures come after Poilievre\u2019s campaign said over the weekend that it has sold an eye-popping 312,000 memberships in the race for the party\u2019s top job. Conservative sources told CBC News that roughly 600,000 party members will be eligible to vote in September\u2019s leadership election. A Poilievre campaign source \u2014 who spoke to CBC News on the condition of anonymity because they aren\u2019t authorized to speak publicly \u2014 said the team is confident Poilievre can win the race on the first ballot given how many memberships he\u2019s sold so far.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a> over?<\/strong> In a column published before the defections, but after Poilievre\u2019s camp released their numbers, the <em>Post\u2019s<\/em> <strong>John Ivison<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/john-ivison-so-many-new-conservatives-but-not-even-the-party-knows-the-real-number\">writes that<\/a> unaligned senior Conservatives are convinced that Poilievre\u2019s lead is unassailable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deep dive on Anand:<\/strong>\u00a0In <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>, the inimitable <strong>Shannon Proudfoot<\/strong> takes readers behind the scenes\u00a0on an outing with <strong>Anita Anand<\/strong>, a newcomer to politics who is managing nightmarish files as <strong>Justin Trudeau\u2019s<\/strong> defence minister, making positive impressions within the forces and among defence experts. She is seen as\u00a0 thoughtful, a good brief, and crucially, someone who is not interested in sitting back and waiting for difficult problems to resolve themselves. She is doing well enough in a difficult job that her name increasingly comes up when talk in Ottawa turns to succession.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Her move to defence reads as a clear statement of trust from Trudeau that she can navigate this post under urgent circumstances as well as she did the last one. It could also end up being a poisoned chalice handed over with a smile of gratitude and apology. In cabinet, there is a fine line between a difficult but important task and an impossible and thankless one. Anand\u2019s success in this job\u2014and Canada\u2019s reputation and safety in a world gone dark\u2014might rest on that knife\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Norad visit:<\/strong> Speaking of Anand, she and Trudeau visited Norad headquarters ahead of a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to L.A. for the Summit of Americas, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8904517\/trudeau-anand-norad-headquarters\/\">reports<\/a>. Trudeau will spend the rest of the week there with leaders from across the Western Hemisphere, although without the president of Mexico, who stayed away to protest <strong>Joe Biden\u2019s<\/strong> snub of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Trudeau declined to comment on the controversy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drainville to CAQ:<\/strong> Former PQ MNA <strong>Bernard Drainville<\/strong> announced Wednesday that he will run for the CAQ in L\u00e9vis, and declared it is a \u201cdead end is to entrench ourselves in the false dilemma between sovereignists and federalists,\u201d the <em>Gazette<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-news\/quebecers-no-longer-have-an-appetite-for-sovereignty-federalism-battle-drainville\">reports<\/a>.\u00a0Drainville, a former journalist, was pressed by reporters over his decision to abandon Quebec independence, and attacked by the PQ for doing so.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-content__content-group\"><strong>Too much?<\/strong> Also in the <em>Gazette<\/em>, <strong>Thomas Mulcair<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/opinion\/columnists\/tom-mulcair-more-and-more-legault-is-showing-his-nationalist-stripes\">writes that<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Fran\u00e7ois Legault<\/strong> may be \u201ctoo clever by half\u201d by adding a former\u00a0sovereignist like\u00a0Drainville to his bench.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The arrival of diehard sovereignists risks pushing away the CAQ\u2018s sizeable federalist vote. It\u2019s getting hard to believe Legault has really abandoned his own long-held separatist views when he surrounds himself with people who\u2019ve spent their lives trying to break up Canada and have never recanted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n<p><strong>Tax takes:<\/strong> On Tuesday Conservatives and New Democrats proposed different solutions to\u00a0 address the rising cost of living, both involving taxes, CTV reports. The Conservatives put forward an omnibus motion asking that the government temporarily suspend the GST collected on fuel, freeze the carbon tax, and eliminate tariffs on fertilizer. <strong>Jagmeet Singh<\/strong>, in contrast, called for more taxes, an excess profit tax on big companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Misunderstood:<\/strong> A senior official testified Tuesday evening that <strong>Marco Mendicino<\/strong> was \u201cmisunderstood\u201d when he seemed to say police asked the federal government to invoke the Emergencies Act in February, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/mendicino-misunderstood-in-saying-police-asked-for-emergencies-act-deputy-minister-1.5937524\">reports<\/a>.
