Green High School for Teaching \u2014 a school they\u2019d never heard of before \u2014 after failing to get into any of her 12 choices.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the dad is weighing leaving the Big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le altogether over the snub.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are either going to have to find a private school that we cannot afford or think about leaving the city because I\u2019m not going to have her go to that school,\u201d Melli-Jones told The Post.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-485.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Beacon High School\" class=\"wp-image-22601273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-485.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-485.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-485.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>One father told The Post the new school admissions system may force his family to leave the city.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Matthew McDermott<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His wife broke into tears over the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and his eighth-grader is distraught, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked me if it\u2019s going to be OK. \u2018Are we going to find a school for me?\u2019 And I don\u2019t have an answer for her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The application and selection process has been a rite of passage for kids, with building anticipation for the big day when they\u2019re told where they\u2019ll be going in the fall. <\/p>\n<p>But the process this time around was stressful throughout because of delays and confusion over what the new process would be at the end of former Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Eighth graders had until March 1 to\u00a0submit an application\u00a0listing up to 12 high schools or special programs of their choice in order of preference.<\/p>\n<p>After months of delay about how this year\u2019s application process would unfold, the city Department of Education unveiled its new admission system just a month before the deadline \u2014 lowering the bar to get into many competitive high schools and tossing kids with a range of academic achievement into a random hopper.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-484.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22601293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-484.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-484.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/school-lottery-484.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s changes to the admissions system made the process more stressful for families and DOE officials. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A former DOE enrollment official said the changes and deadline amounted to \u201cthe most stressful year I can recall.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMore than ever, it was less of a meritocracy than any year in memory,\u201d said Maurice Frumkin, who now runs the private NYC Admissions Solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have families that were getting information at the last moment and a process that is the least based on academic record in the history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan resident Lauren Bernstein said she was also considering moving out of the city after her daughter didn\u2019t get any of her 12 choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t apply to any privates, but now I\u2019m calling them all like crazy,\u201d said Bernstein, who has two other kids she is putting through college.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be very hard to afford two in college and one in private school. Admission letters used to come out in March before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The new formula takes a student\u2019s top mark out of English, math, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> studies and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> in seventh and eighth grades, then assigns a point value to that mark. The points are then averaged to determine which of four lottery groups the student falls into.<\/p>\n<p>Standardized test scores and attendance \u2014 used in prior years \u2014 were not a factor this time.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Supporters have said the system should increase diversity in the city\u2019s most coveted schools, but opponents have slammed the program for deemphasizing student performance.<\/p>\n<p>One Staten Island mom said the DOE was playing \u201cRussian roulette with our kids\u2019 futures.\u201d  Her daughter, who has a 97 average, got her fifth choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so sad for her. My heart is broken,\u201d said the mother, who requested to remain anonymous cause she works as a city teacher. \u201cShe would pray every night for this school and just like that \u2014 for no logical reason \u2014 it was taken away from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was spit out of a bad algorithm,\u201d she said. \u201cSo the kids that work so hard and get lousy lottery numbers suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOE didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for data on how many students received their first or top three choices.<\/p>\n<p>Frumkin, the former DOE enrollment official, said he was convinced the process was only an interim solution that \u201cdidn\u2019t make many families pleased at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the system did open the door to many families who felt shut out of the city\u2019s highest performing schools in years past, he said.<\/p>\n<p>DOE officials have stressed the process is not permanent and could change as soon as next year.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
