Unlike many other portable SSDs, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/SAMSUNG-Shield-1TB-SSD-Blue\/dp\/B09VLJB2DC\/?ots=1&amp;slotNum=0&amp;imprToken=a2c04295-ed12-413a-77f&amp;tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">T7 Shield<\/a> never turned into a heat source that I\u2019d consider huddling around in the winter. It stayed room temperature to the touch throughout testing.<\/p>\n<p>The T7 Shield is an otherwise straightforward gadget with a single USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port and a blue LED indicator on the front-facing side. At 98g (3.46oz) in weight and 2.32 x 3.46 x 0.51in (59 x 88 x 13mm) in measurement, this SSD slips right into pockets or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesavvy.com\/reviews\/the-best-waterproof-backpacks\/\">backpacks<\/a> for on-location shooting or simply bringing a game to a friend\u2019s house. It\u2019s important for portable SSDs like the T7 Shield to accommodate a wide range of operating systems because quick file transfers, a key feature of these drives, need to be seamless across devices.<\/p>\n<p>There are few things that sting more than painstakingly editing hours of footage into a video only to run into compatibility problems when it comes time to export and store on an SSD\u2014this is something you\u2019re not likely to face with the T7 Shield.<\/p>\n<p>You plug it in and it works. It\u2019s stylish and it keeps your data safe, inside and out. Plug the T7 Shield into a compatible computer and you\u2019ll be prompted with a folder containing install files. Run the correct setup for your machine\u2019s operating system and jump into Samsung\u2019s portable SSD software.<\/p>\n<p>There are just a few things you can do with this app, including locking your data up behind password protection, monitoring the remaining storage space on your drive, and keeping the software itself up to date.<\/p>\n<p>If you want an extra layer of defense for your personal data, you\u2019re a few clicks away.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Security\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Security<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Samsung makes it easy to secure your files behind a password. With your T7 Shield plugged into your computer, open the Samsung Portable SSD software and click Settings. Now, turn the Security Mode toggle to the On position and set your password. That\u2019s all there is to it.<\/p>\n<p>Your data is also backed by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/445096\/what-does-military-grade-encryption-mean\/\">AES 256-bit hardware encryption<\/a>\u2014considered \u201cmilitary-grade\u201d\u2014by default with no effort needed from your side.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ReadWrite_Speeds\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Read\/Write Speeds<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Samsung boasts read\/write speeds of up to 1,050\/1,000MB\/s for this drive. While it didn\u2019t hit those numbers on either of my computers, my <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bestbuy.7tiv.net\/c\/156932\/671509\/10014?subId1=rg&amp;subId2=116638&amp;sharedid=&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fmacbook-pro-14-laptop-apple-m1-pro-chip-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-latest-model-space-gray%2F6450853.p%3FskuId%3D6450853\">MacBook Pro<\/a> got pretty close.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the results in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/app\/blackmagic-disk-speed-test\/id425264550?mt=12\">BlackMagic\u2019s Disk Speed Test<\/a> (available for Mac) compared to those from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/osdn.net\/projects\/crystaldiskmark\/releases\/\">CrystalDiskMark<\/a> (available for Windows). I ran these tests with the same included USB C-to-C cable and same SSD, but the tests are different\u2014your read\/write speed results will vary due to many factors, including test and cable choice, the CPU (Central Processing Unit) you have in your system, USB port generation, and more.<\/p>\n<p>My MacBook Pro 2016 (equipped with an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Intel-i7-12700K-Desktop-Processor-Unlocked\/dp\/B09FXNVDBJ\/?tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">Intel core i7 CPU<\/a>) nearly hit the max target, consistently reaching 900MB\/s or above for both read and write speeds.<\/p>\n<p>My Windows PC (built with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/AMD-Processor-Wraith-Stealth-Cooler\/dp\/B07B41WS48?tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">Ryzen 5 2600<\/a>), on the other hand, barely eked out over 400MB\/s each (with regards to the first 2 less strenuous test cases). It\u2019s still a fast drive; 400 MB\/s completely blows HDDs out of the water, but there is a performance drop from system to system.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re backing up your childhood photos or storing footage you just shot out in the wild, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll be as impressed as I was with the speed of this little drive. How is it so fast, you may ask? That\u2019s thanks to the T7 Shield\u2019s utilization of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/404627\/what-are-nvme-drives-and-should-you-buy-one\/\">NVMe storage<\/a>, rather than the age-old SATA standard. What that means for you: less time spent waiting around for loading bars, and more time to fill up the drive with all the data you want.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Should_You_Buy_the_Samsung_T7_Shield\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_4\">Should You Buy the Samsung T7 Shield?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The only reason I wouldn\u2019t recommend the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/SAMSUNG-Shield-1TB-SSD-Blue\/dp\/B09VLJB2DC\/?ots=1&amp;slotNum=0&amp;imprToken=a2c04295-ed12-413a-77f&amp;tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">T7 Shield<\/a> is if you already have a T7 that stays at your desk more than it travels with you. If that sounds like you, the full price of this drive for the extra protection it provides may not be worth the upgrade. The original T7 puts up the exact same read\/write speeds as its IP65 partner; you wouldn\u2019t be missing much.<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re on the hunt for a new portable SSD, make it the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/SAMSUNG-Shield-1TB-SSD-Blue\/dp\/B09VLJB2DC\/?ots=1&amp;slotNum=0&amp;imprToken=a2c04295-ed12-413a-77f&amp;tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">T7 Shield<\/a> if it fits your budget.
