One is to get midterm voters to think about something other than wallet-busting inflation, surging violent crime, the baby-formula shortage and the wide open southern \u00adborder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No sooner had Thursday\u2019s show ended than that goal grew even more elusive. Friday\u2019s historic inflation numbers mean voters\u2019 pain at the pump and supermarket will continue, and led to another big drop on Wall Street as pessimism over the economy deepens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The other aim of the hearings is to put a target on Donald Trump\u2019s back. He is Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s white whale and she would like nothing more than to lock him up to humiliate him and make sure he doesn\u2019t run again in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coming more than 500 days after the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>alling attack on the Capitol, the bid to paint Trump as the mastermind of an attempted coup fell far short of convincing despite the fact that Pelosi devised a one-sided presentation. And with this being the only prime-time hearing scheduled before the committee\u2019s September report, it is unlikely she would hold back any bombshell evidence of Trump\u2019s guilt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Certainly Trump doesn\u2019t think he\u2019s in danger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/AP22144688424217.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Donald Trump\" class=\"wp-image-22625537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/AP22144688424217.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/AP22144688424217.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Trump is likely to run for president again in 2024. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t imagine I would be prosecuted,\u201d he told me Friday. \u201cI did absolutely nothing wrong. We have free speech.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>He may not have committed a crime, but there is plenty wrong with what Trump said and did. The long list begins with his too-hot speech that January morning, his public and private demands that then-Vice President Mike Pence overturn the election and his delay in telling his rampaging supporters to leave the Capitol.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, charging him criminally based on what we know would be a giant leap even for Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Merrick Garland\u2019s politicized Justice Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump also expressed the same disdain for Pelosi she has for him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the same people who created the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, the Mueller investigation and the Ukraine hoax,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a disgrace and they can\u2019t run the country. Look at it. Similar reports have surfaced in the past, and this one met the same fate: He wouldn\u2019t confirm or deny he made the comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, something has to be done but I haven\u2019t announced anything,\u201d he said. \u201cBut in my mind, I\u2019ve made a decision.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a near-lock he is running but he sees no advantage in saying so now. It would mean complying with federal rules on reporting fund-raising and expenditures and would stretch the campaign to an unbearable length.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It could also change the midterm dynamics. As it stands, a red wave is forming and there is little upside credit available to Trump. On the other hand, if he announces early and the wave fizzles, he would be blamed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The last time I interviewed Trump was on Presidents\u2019 Day at Mar-a-Lago. My main focus was on his continued claims that the 2020 election was stolen, which I see as a dead end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s backward looking and is likely to turn off moderate Republicans and independents who might otherwise be attracted to Trump\u2019s policies, which were certainly superior to Biden\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I had asked then if he regarded agreement with him on the stolen election as a litmus test for supporters, including candidates he endorses. He insisted the answer was no and claimed he talks about the last election mostly \u201cbecause it\u2019s the most important thing\u201d for some supporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I reminded him of that exchange and this time he didn\u2019t cite his supporters as an excuse for why he talks about it so often, saying \u201ca lot of things have come out since then that are as hot as a pistol.\u201d He was referring to some state audits and presumably the movie by Dinesh D\u2019Souza called \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/2000mules.com\/\">2000 Mules<\/a>,\u201d both of which try to prove his claims but have not made serious inroads among unpersuaded voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using the stolen theme also serves as a smokescreen for Trump to escape any second-guessing about his term or the way he campaigned for reelection. Joe Biden\u2019s victory can\u2019t be undone, so what\u2019s the point beyond a rallying cry?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Friday, for the first time, he tied his stolen claim to forward-looking congressional action, albeit an impractical one. Thankfully, even with Biden making shameful racial accusations, the Lewis bill stalled in the Senate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s response to that history was to say that \u201cRepublicans should do something\u201d about voting laws, and added that \u201cyou need to have secure, honest elections and strong borders or you don\u2019t have a country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s certainly true, but it\u2019s also true that Trump gives the impression he\u2019s stuck in the past and needs a fresh message. Although he is clearly still a huge power within the GOP, his old feuds and grievances already sound stale and by 2024, they are not likely to inspire the hope and confidence America desperately needs.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dem_outta_%E2%80%98control\"><\/span>Dem outta \u2018control\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Reader Joe Alloy points out the two faces of Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Dem. He writes: \u201cMurphy is leading the talks on gun control but in the midst of the George Floyd riots of 2020, he and Sen.
