\n Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday increased pressure for teachers to show up on the first day of school, saying it\u2019s \u201ctheir job\u201d \u2014 as he shot down pleas from the principals and teachers unions to delay the reopening.<\/p>\n

The mayor was grilled about the pushback from the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators and the United Federation of Teachers at his daily press briefing and said he was confident teachers will be there on Sept. 10 despite the opposition.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless folks have a medical accommodation, their job is to come in and serve our kids,\u201d de Blasio told reporters. \u201cAnd I\u2019m convinced that\u2019s what they\u2019re going to do because that\u2019s what they\u2019ve done their whole lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a professional reality,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople are going to show up because it\u2019s the right thing to do for our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both unions sent letters to de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza on Wednesday calling for a delay to the school year over coronavirus concerns.<\/p>\n

The CSA, which represents about 6,100 principals, assistant principals, supervisors and administrators in New York City, said there are still too many unknowns going into this school year \u2014 despite the city releasing its final reopening plan last week.<\/p>\n

One of those concerns includes the shortage of nurses at city schools.<\/p>\n

De Blasio has said nurses, hired by NYC Health Hospitals, will be on hand at every single school during the pandemic, meeting a major demand from the unions. But he didn\u2019t offer more details Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo question in my mind, we\u2019ll have them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Asked why not delay the return to school for a couple of weeks to give schools more time to prepare, Hizzoner said there\u2019s still plenty of time left to address concerns \u2014 which he\u2019s repeatedly said before.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a month away from school opening, it\u2019s understandable that there\u2019s still going to be questions that need to be resolved,\u201d he said. \u201cOf course, there\u2019s going to be challenges, but in the end \u2014 let\u2019s go address those challenges.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
