Jackson\u2019s \u201cA Strange Loop,\u201d a groundbreaking Broadway show about a queer Black man\u2019s struggles with identity and creativity, was named best musical at Sunday night\u2019s Tony Awards presentation.<\/p>\n<p> The show, already honored with the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/winners\/michael-r-jackson\" class=\"icon none\">Pulitzer Prize in drama<\/a> last year, was also recognized for best book of a musical.\u00a0 In accepting the book award, Jackson, himself a Black gay man, said he often felt unseen and unheard as an artist and started working on the show more than a decade ago as a way to move forward.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cI just wanted to create a life raft for myself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lehman Trilogy,\u201d a drama that chronicled the rise and fall of the Lehman Bros. financial firm, was named best play. Sam Mendes, the film and theater veteran who directed the production, won the Tony for best direction of a play.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s event, held at New York City\u2019s Radio City Music Hall and televised live on CBS, marked the Tony Awards\u2019 75<sup>th<\/sup> annual edition. The presentation, hosted by Broadway veteran and recent Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, referenced Broadway\u2019s past in various ways and also included a tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim, the creator of many beloved Broadway musicals.<\/p>\n<p>Sondheim figured into the night in another sway. A gender-sw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed version of his 1970 show \u201cCompany\u201d was named best revival of a musical. Marianne Elliott, the production\u2019s director, won the Tony for best direction of a musical.<\/p>\n<p>A production of \u201cTake Me Out,\u201d a two-decade-old baseball-themed drama that also examines gay issues, won the Tony for best revival of a play.<\/p>\n<p>The past season challenged Broadway in many ways, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As many production cast members contracted the virus, the industry relied heavily on understudies, a fact referenced by award presenters throughout the night. Also recognized during the Tony presentation: the COVID-19 safety monitors who ensured that proper protocols were followed inside theaters.<\/p>\n<p>Some shows that premiered this season actually were running in previews during the 2019-\u201920 season, but then got curtailed by Broadway\u2019s COVID shutdown. A case in point: \u201cThe Lehman Trilogy.\u201d In accepting the award for best play, Ben Power, who adapted the Stefano Massini\u2019s original \u201cLehman\u201d script, noted that there was a gap of more than 500 days between the show\u2019s fourth and fifth performances.<\/p>\n<p>But in many ways, the past Broadway season was one defined by the industry\u2019s efforts to be more inclusive.
