\u2014 so compelling.<\/p>\n<p>For 24 years she was, of course, Kathleen Biden, wife of the notorious Hunter, and daughter-in-law of the president.<\/p>\n<p>In the final chapter, she goes to DC Superior Court to renounce her married name and reclaim her identity as Kathleen Buhle, of Chicago\u2019s working-class South Side.<\/p>\n<p>She never explains explicitly why she abandoned the Biden name, although taunts from Hunter after their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/03\/02\/ex-claims-hunter-biden-blew-money-on-hookers-drugs\/?_ga=2.101574852.43020985.1655075567-1024448182.1639599268\">ugly divorce <\/a>played a role. \u201cAre you enjoying your last name,\u201d he would say.<\/p>\n<p>Still, her book makes clear that despite the immense privileges, \u201cbeing a Biden\u201d isn\u2019t all it\u2019s cracked up to be.<\/p>\n<p>Kathleen makes no mention in the lengthy acknowledgements of any Biden, other than her three daughters, Maisy, 21, Finnegan, 23, and Naomi, 28 \u2014 whose November wedding will be held at the White House.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, she says she was always made to feel lower-class and that she wasn\u2019t \u201ca true member of the Biden family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early in her marriage, she recalls: \u201cWe were taking family photos and Hunter\u2019s aunt [Val] was running the show . . . At one point she announced, \u2018Now let\u2019s do Biden blood only\u2019 . . . My daughter and my husband were in the picture but somehow I wasn\u2019t included.\u201d<br \/>When the Secret Service told her before Inauguration Day in 2009 that only Hunter and their daughters would be protected, she felt \u201cembarrassed . . . But she told him: \u201cHunt . . . a kid from a middle-class family does not have a ballroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe front door opened into a foyer with a marble floor and double staircase . . . He had a tuxedo hanging in his closet \u2014 a tuxedo he used fairly regularly . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunter had instant entry into the world of power because he had something better than money: an actual US senator as a father. [He] had grown up in a world of affluence beyond my understanding. He\u2019d talk of those with \u2018new money\u2019 [with] disdain . . . A few weeks later they bought a 10,000-square-foot mansion with six marble fireplaces on the du Pont Winterthur estate, near his dad\u2019s place, for $310,000.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter \u201cwasn\u2019t nervous about the price . . . Supported every step of the way? No mention of the family he\u2019d left behind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had been suspicious that her husband was spending so much time with his sister-in-law after Beau died of brain cancer, but their therapist told her it \u201cwas an important part of Hunter\u2019s grieving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The evidence came in November 2016, when her daughters told her in their therapist\u2019s office that they had seen incriminating texts between the lovers on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could I have missed the truth when it was right there,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought back to the signs: all the weeks and months that he\u2019d lived with [Hallie] in Delaware. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s. The pictures online that made me cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_cellphone_from_hell\"><\/span>The cellphone from hell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That night, she went through a phone Hunter had left behind when he\u2019d moved out the previous year \u2014 and discovered his sordid secret life, which would become public knowledge through his abandoned laptop four years later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I\u2019d felt as if I was losing my mind, he\u2019d been living a strange new life I didn\u2019t recognize at all. The texts were filled with curses and graphic sexual references. He was mean at times, and then strangely tender, with dozens of women \u2014 none of whom I\u2019d ever heard of before. He treats her like an \u201cintrusion\u201d when she comes to visit Beau in hospital, she writes, and calls her an \u201cidiot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he goes on a crack bender in LA at the Chateau Marmont, he tells her he is working on his \u201csobriety\u201d and she is \u201ccrazy\u201d for not believing him. That was \u201clike going to an ice cream shop to work on your dairy free diet,\u201d she quips.<\/p>\n<p>When she was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer, a few months after their 2017 divorce, she does not mention Hunter during the period she endured surgery and chemotherapy. On his laptop there are only two brief mentions by Hunter to friends about Kathleen\u2019s cancer, amid all his vitriol.<\/p>\n<p>But in February 2019, he railed against her in a text message for telling someone named Maureen \u201cI wasn\u2019t there for you when you had cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is never a trace of bitterness from Kathleen.
