\n Three-quarters of Americans with cats couldn\u2019t have gotten through the quarantine without their pet, according to new research.<\/p>\n

The survey of 2,000 cat owners (57 percent of whom also have a dog) looked at the various benefits provided by our furry friends during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways in which they helped us through.<\/p>\n

Pets were found to provide comfort and help with feelings of anxiety: 57 percent said having a pet made them feel less alone, while 49 percent said it helped them feel less anxious.<\/p>\n

Those weren\u2019t the only benefits though \u2014 41 percent said being with their pet gave them someone to talk to and 35 percent said their pet brought a feeling of positivity to their days.<\/p>\n

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Royal Canin in advance of National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day on Aug. 22, the survey also found quarantine was an opportunity for respondents to learn more about their four-legged friends.<\/p>\n

Two-thirds (66 percent) of cat owners surveyed learned or noticed something new about their pet, while 76 percent became closer to their pet as a result of the quarantine.<\/p>\n

Being cooped-up indoors gave respondents time to uncover a new spot their pet enjoys hiding in (64 percent), notice a new behavior (57 percent) and discover a new food their pet likes (55 percent).<\/p>\n

But our pets, like many of us, may be ready for things to return to normal: the survey found 73 percent of those surveyed said their cat seems to be ready for some space.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough many cats are enjoying the attention from their owners being at home, most cats are independent and do a good job of structuring their day themselves,\u201d said Laura Pletz, DVM, Scientific Services Manager, Royal Canin. \u201cOwners should make gradual changes to help reduce stress and ease the transition back to \u2018normal\u2019 life.\u201d<\/p>\n

With all the things our pets do for us \u2014 during quarantine and beyond \u2014 it\u2019s no wonder that respondents want to return the favor.<\/p>\n

Eighty-six percent of respondents said they want to take care of their pet because their pet takes care of them \u2014 and 84 percent said their cat is important to them and therefore their health is important.<\/p>\n

But when it comes to taking their cat to the vet, some respondents have misconceptions about the best practice.<\/p>\n

Many cats aren\u2019t being taken in regularly: 6 in 10 said they only take their cat to the vet when they notice something is wrong, versus taking them for check-ups.<\/p>\n

Twenty-three percent of those surveyed believe cats don\u2019t need to be taken to the vet as often as dogs, while 24 percent don\u2019t believe indoor cats need to be vaccinated.<\/p>\n

And 35 percent mistakenly believe indoor cats don\u2019t need to be taken to the vet as often as outdoor cats.<\/p>\n

In good news<\/a> though, the survey found 66 percent plan to change how they care for their pet after COVID-19.<\/p>\n

And to thank them for all the things they did for us during this time, 36 percent plan to take their pet to the vet once quarantine ends to make sure they\u2019re healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegular veterinary visits ensure that cats are up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm prevention and flea and tick prevention,\u201d said Laura Pletz, DVM, Scientific Services Manager, Royal Canin. \u201cAnnual vet visits for all cats are essential to maintaining health and wellbeing, but senior cats and those with chronic conditions should be seen more frequently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benefits of having a pet during the quarantine<\/strong><\/p>\n

  2. Helped them to feel less anxious: 49 percent<\/li>\n
  3. Playing with their pet helped encourage them to move around my space: 47 percent<\/li>\n
  4. Gave them someone to talk to: 41 percent<\/li>\n
  5. Helped give them a schedule throughout the day: 39 percent<\/li>\n
  6. Brought a feeling of positivity into my day: 35 percent<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Why are cats not taken to the vet more often?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. It\u2019s too expensive: 35 percent<\/li>\n
    2. Don\u2019t believe their cat needs to go to the vet more often: 30 percent<\/li>\n
    3. Never convenient to go to the vet (they\u2019re out of the way): 27 percent<\/li>\n
    4. Lack of access to nearby vets who they trust: 22 percent<\/li>\n
    5. Their cat hates going to the vet (causes them stress, etc.): 21 percent<\/li>\n
    6. Worried about what the vet might find: 18 percent<\/li>\n
    7. Too difficult to get their cat in the carrier\/car: 18 percent<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
