\n Democrats in California have already begun pouncing on Sen. Kamala Harris\u2019 Senate seat \u2014 less than two days after she was tapp<\/a>ed as Joe Biden\u2019s running mate, according to the state\u2019s governor.<\/p>\n

Gov. Gavin News<\/a>om is being pitched by numerous people who want to fill Harris\u2019 (D-Calif.) vacated Senate seat if she and Biden clinch the presidency in November, he admitted Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, the California governor made the admission after being asked if he had been approached by anyone suggesting themselves as a replacement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you may be the only one who hasn\u2019t, unless you just did,\u201d Newsom quipped, \u201cAnd that is only a slight exaggeration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t be more pointed privately than I am being publicly: That\u2019s not what I\u2019m focused on right now \u2014 I\u2019m focused on what I need to be focused on, and that\u2019s you, and your health and that\u2019s the economy and its needs and the support that we need to provide small businesses and the priority to get our kids back in school,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Harris would keep her Senate seat if she and Biden lost the election in November; Newsom has no ability to appoint someone to the seat without a vacancy.<\/p>\n

Newsom is a Democrat, and California is a solidly blue state. Any Democrat who he appointed in the event of a vacancy would immedia<\/a>tely be given a safely-Democrat seat and enormous national exposure.<\/p>\n

The governor will also be up for reelection in 2022, something that will certainly be in the back of his mind when considering what types of voters he\u2019d benefit most from exciting with his Senate appointment.<\/p>\n

While he did not specify which of his fellow California Democrats had begun vying for Harris\u2019 seat, some prominent names have already started to emerge.<\/p>\n

Some of the most well known names include House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), who was also on the vice presidential short list, California Attorney General<\/a> Xavier Becerra, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis.<\/p>\n

Unlike the other names, Kounalakis lacks a national profile. Despite that, she was deeply involved in promoting Harris to the Biden campaign when concerns mounted about her joining the ticket, according to Politico. Her loyalty to Harris and involvement in the vacancy being opened could place her in the running.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
