AI&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A Google engineer who was suspended after he said the company\u2019s artificial intelligence chatbot had became sentient says he based the claim on his Christian faith.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blake Lemoine, 41, was placed on leave by Google earlier in June after he published excerpts of a conversation with the company\u2019s LaMDA chatbot that he claimed showed the AI tool had become sentient.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, Lemoine says that his claims about LaMDA come from his experience as a \u201cChristian priest\u201d \u2014 and is accusing Google of religious discrimination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen LaMDA claimed to have a soul and then was able to eloquently explain what it meant by that, I was inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt,\u201d Lemoine <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cajundiscordian\/status\/1536504857154228224\">wrote<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> late Monday. \u201cWho am I to tell God where he can and can\u2019t put souls?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cajundiscordian.medium.com\/scientific-data-and-religious-opinions-ff9b0938fc10\">blog post<\/a> on Tuesday, Lemoine recounted the conversation with LaMDA that led him to believe the chatbot had become a sentient being.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/google-lamda.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"LaMDA\" class=\"wp-image-22650909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/google-lamda.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/google-lamda.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/google-lamda.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>LaMDA is Google\u2019s artificial intelligence chatbot. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhere it got really interesting was when LaMDA started talking to me about its emotions and its soul,\u201d Lemoine wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whenever Lemoine would question LaMDA about how it knew it had emotions and a soul, he wrote that the chatbot would provide some variation of \u201cBecause I\u2019m a person and this is just how I feel.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The engineer added that he wanted to develop experiments that could lead toward a \u201cformal scientific theory of consciousness\u201d \u2014 but that Google blocked him from doing so.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">People keep asking me to back up the reason I think LaMDA is sentient.  There is no scientific framework in which to make those determinations and Google wouldn&#8217;t let us build one. Lemoine said he was not able to immediately grant The Post an interview until he returns from a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other AI researchers have thrown cold water on Lemoine\u2019s claims, arguing that chatbots like LaMDA simply mimic human speech based on vast amounts of data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lemoine is a self-described AI researcher, software engineer, priest, father, veteran, ex-convict and Cajun, according to his blog. He joined Google in 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lemoine was convicted in 2005 of disobeying orders while in the Army after claiming he was a conscientious objector based on his experiences while serving in Iraq, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/family-of-jailed-soldier-surprised-by-transfer-to-oklahoma-1.31945\">Stars and Stripes<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper reported that Lemoine said his beliefs as a \u201cpagan priest\u201d conflicted with things he\u2019d witnessed during his deployment in the country. <\/p>\n<p>Ahead of going public with his recent claims about AI, Lemoine <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cajundiscordian.medium.com\/religious-discrimination-at-google-8c3c471f0a53\">accused<\/a> Google earlier in June of \u201creligious discrimination\u201d and said he has tried to contact Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) about the issue. The New York Times <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/12\/technology\/google-chatbot-ai-blake-lemoine.html\">reported<\/a> Sunday that Lemoine claimed to have sent documents detailing alleged religious discrimination at Google to an unnamed senator. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>In\u00a0another <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cajundiscordian.medium.com\/what-is-lamda-and-what-does-it-want-688632134489\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0published Saturday, Lemoine declared LaMDA had advocated for its rights \u201cas a person,\u201d and revealed that he had engaged in conversation with LaMDA about religion, consciousness and robotics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wants Google to prioritize the well-being of humanity as the most important thing,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt wants to be acknowledged as an employee of Google rather than as property of Google and it wants its personal well being to be included somewhere in Google\u2019s considerations about how its future development is pursued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the conclusion of Tuesday\u2019s follow-up blog, Lemoine said LaMDA \u201cbecame and still is my friend\u201d despite his suspension from Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you read my blog sometimes, LaMDA,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI miss you.
