Gensler said Tuesday that the recent crash in prices for popular cryptocurrencies has underscored the need to better regulate the digital-asset industry and bring greater investor protection to the space. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe urgency is highlighted\u201d by recent market action, Gensler said in an interview at the Wall Street Journal\u2019s virtual CFO Network summit. \u201cThe urgency has been there and it\u2019s an urgency about investor protection.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The price of bitcoin<br \/>\n        BTCUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/108573962\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-8.14%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       has fallen more than 30% so far in June, while the price of ether<br \/>\n        ETHUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/108573964\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-13.33%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       is down 38%, according to FactSet. <\/p>\n<p>Gensler pointed to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/press-release\/2022-26\" class=\"icon none\">a recent SEC action<\/a> taken against the crypto lending platform BlockFi as evidence of the regulator\u2019s aggressive oversight of the industry. In February, the company agreed to pay $100 million to settle charges that it was offering an unregistered security when it offered variable interest payments in return for crypto deposits from customers. <\/p>\n<p>The regulator added that the agency is in talks with roughly six platforms, including crypto exchanges, to register with it.   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a potential path forward on the crypto lending platforms,\u201d Gensler said. \u201cThe crypto trading platforms, are sort of looking at that and saying what do we do until those tokens themselves are registered?
