“#ESPN\u2019s Keyshawn Johnson-led show ready to prove critics wrong<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Keyshawn Johnson says he considers mornings on ESPN Radio \u201cthe biggest property in the country.\u201d He may be right.<\/p>\n

\u201cMike & Mike\u201d built ESPN\u2019s morning house for nearly two decades. After Mike Greenberg\u2019s departure, Trey Wingo rented the place for three years with Mike Golic Sr. & Jr.<\/p>\n

And now, look who is moving into the predominantly white sports-radio neighborhood beginning Monday. Its Keyshawn, Jay Williams & Zubin Mehenti.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is different than what has typically been on the air,\u201d Keyshawn told The Post. \u201cIt is a different audience that we are going to be reaching. Our goal is to maintain some of the past audience but those people may not necessarily enjoy our voices and they\u2019ll go someplace else, but they\u2019ll be back.\u201d<\/p>\n

How will it be different?<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, we are three minorities,\u201d Keyshawn said. \u201cThat is No. 1. There haven\u2019t been three minorities that I know of on a morning national sports show.\u201d<\/p>\n

There has not. Before they have uttered a word together on radio and ESPN2, they already have some detractors. This happ<\/a>ens with change.<\/p>\n

Keyshawn brought up the critics on his own, even if he won\u2019t name sports radio stalwart Chris Russo and Fox Sports morning host Clay Travis.<\/p>\n

ESPN built the show around Keyshawn, who has been waking up early for four years as part of ESPN Radio\u2019s Los Angeles program.<\/p>\n

At 48, he moved back east for the show and \u201cNFL Live.\u201d \u201cKeyshawn, JWill & Zubin\u201d will begin at 6 a.m. in New York, while three days a week Keyshawn will also be in Bristol for \u201cNFL Live\u201d at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n

Russo said he couldn\u2019t see the new trio working in part because of the morning show grind, while Travis tweeted he was going to bid on a beach house because the new ESPN trio will make it so he has a \u201cmorning radio massacre.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at those types of individuals as clowns, to be honest with you,\u201d Keyshawn said.<\/p>\n

Williams \u2014 the former No. 2 pick out of Duke, whose NBA career was shortened because of a gruesome motorcycle accident \u2014 was only asked to do the program a month ago. ESPN had considered pairing Keyshawn with Max Kellerman, Jalen Rose or David Jacoby.<\/p>\n

Williams, from Plainfield, N.J., has no full-time radio hosting experience, but grew up listening to \u201cMike & the Mad Dog.\u201d He was honored by Russo\u2019s diss and has sought Golic & Greenberg\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n

Williams, 38, was shaken by the \u201chate mail\u201d he said he received after he replaced Golic. He actually called Golic to pay \u201chomage\u201d to him.<\/p>\n

Golic, Williams said, was \u201cangry\u201d how everything went down with his departure, but not at him. Williams has an open invite to Golic to come check out the renovations of his longtime home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want him to come back on the show,\u201d Williams said. \u201cHe knows there is an open door for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Johnson and Williams are well-known both for their athletic and media<\/a> careers, Mehenti is not. He has been at ESPN for nine years, largely hosting the night time \u201cSportsCenters.\u201d While his Indian roots are unique in the profession, his story is basic tri-state kid turned sportscaster.<\/p>\n

Growing up in East Windsor, N.J., he took special pride that retired FAN host Tony Paige was from his hometown. His dad, Zarir, was an accountant and shared his love of sports. Zubin listened to the FAN and read the New York tabs.<\/p>\n

Zubin\u2019s dad may be his hero, but he didn\u2019t know off-hand that his dad was 73, while he recited Marv Albert\u2019s age of 79 in a heartbeat. Mehenti is not on social media, because he is \u201cold school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just a complementary piece here,\u201d said Mehenti, 42, who has never been a full-time radio host before.<\/p>\n

Like \u201cMike & Mike\u201d had the ex-jock and the metrosexual thing going for its time, Keyshawn, Jay and Zubin have been game<\/a>-planning some radio ammo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to have to put [Jay] in his Duke place a couple of times,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear any s\u2013t about Duke. Cheating [Mike] Krzyzewski. I\u2019m going to tease him. All those blue blood programs act like they don\u2019t do no wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams plans on scoring Mehenti some romance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to find you a wife on national radio,\u201d Williams said he told Mehenti.<\/p>\n

The plan also includes taking more listener calls than the previous ESPN morning shows.<\/p>\n

Keyshawn might be right that ESPN Radio\u2019s morning show with its national reach and its TV simulcast might be the top real estate in its genre. That means the learning curve must be very quick.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are going to come on a journey as we figure it out,\u201d Williams said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
