style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrogen fuel cells<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> powering vehicles like trucks, buses, ships, trains, aircraft, and to a lesser extent, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cars<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While hydrogen is a green substance in action \u2014 much like green electricity \u2014 it\u2019s sourcing historically isn\u2019t. <span>In 2020, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axpo.com\/ch\/en\/about-us\/magazine.detail.html\/magazine\/renewable-energy\/hydrogen-basics.html\">96% of the hydrogen used<\/a> was produced based on fossil energy sources. <\/span>But now, a German company has found a way to convert waste into usable green hydrogen that can generate power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Remind_me_how_you_make_hydrogen\"><\/span><strong>Remind me how you make hydrogen?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy providers most commonly extract hydrogen from water using heat and chemical reactions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this is traditionally an energy-intensive process that, unless it includes the use of renewable energies, generates harmful greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper shift channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" href=\"https:\/\/h2-industries.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H2-Industries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced the construction of Egypt\u2019s first waste-to-hydrogen facilities and the world\u2019s first project of its type.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company is developing a project to convert organic waste from the Suez Canal Economic Zone into usable hydrogen. This includes\u00a0plastic, agricultural waste, and sewage sludge<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company will transfer this hydrogen into a \u201ccarrier fluid\u201d to transport and use to fill storage tanks much like diesel, but without the respective carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, energy providers can use waste heat from the H2-Industries\u2019 process to generate power with steam turbines and generators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazing stuff.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Huge_price_drops_for_green_hydrogen_production\"><\/span><strong>Huge price drops for green hydrogen production<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the company, the project targets a production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. This means that the power plant can dispose of four million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, one of the big wins for evolving green hydrogen is cost.
