\n Brooks Koepka regrets insulting \u201cother\u201d golfers, but not Dustin Johnson.<\/p>\n

As Koepka chased a fifth major title and assessed the field in front of him heading into the final round of last weekend\u2019s PGA Championship, he seemingly insulted Johnson, then leading the pack, for having \u201conly won one\u201d major, as well as \u201cother guys up there\u201d that he said he didn\u2019t know. Though Koepka chose not to elaborate on his remark about Johnson \u2014 who Koepka said he didn\u2019t plan to discuss the matter with \u2014 he apologized for making it sound like he had never heard of the less-heralded players in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI regret that part of it. That\u2019s what I was trying to say \u2014 that I didn\u2019t know who was on the leaderboard at that point because I hadn\u2019t looked,\u201d Koepka told Golfweek. \u201cThat part I regret and I wish I had used different words because I didn\u2019t pay enough attention to who was under Dustin because he was my main focus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pretty much know everybody, we grew up playing golf with them and it came across that I had no idea who these guys are. And that\u2019s completely false.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koepka, who received criticism from Rory McIlroy and others for the comments, said the increased attention may have contributed to him shooting four over par in the final round, finishing 10 strokes behind winner Collin Morikawa.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, a lot came from it. I don\u2019t mind the pressure of that stuff. I put more pressure on myself than anything external,\u201d Koepka said. \u201cAt the same time, I didn\u2019t back it up. That\u2019s my own problem. Part of being someone who talks openly and truthfully is that sometimes I come off cocky or arrogant, and it can backfire if you\u2019re not going to play good. That\u2019s exactly what happ<\/a>ened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The response to the relatively harmless comment made Koepka, 30, feel even less comfortable in his place on the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not the typical golf guy. I don\u2019t know how else to put that,\u201d Koepka said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t belong to fancy country clubs. I\u2019m not someone who can\u2019t wait to go play those exclusive courses around the country. It doesn\u2019t \u2018ooh\u2019 and awe me like it does other people \u2026.I don\u2019t know if I would say [I\u2019m a] misfit, but it\u2019s definitely not my perfect place, I\u2019d put it that way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been portrayed as the villain, right? I\u2019m different, super competitive, fiery. My idea of talking trash is a whole lot different than other people\u2019s. I get the whole villain thing and I can definitely play into it, and I have\u2026.Not being afraid to chirp up. But if you\u2019re going to do that then you\u2019ve got to back it up and last week I didn\u2019t back it up. I\u2019m okay with the repercussions of that. I\u2019ve got thick skin. I can handle it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
