I might have answered that question differently before \u201cBeba.\u201d As a generation of TikTok and Instagram users seek still more ways to overshare, it\u2019s only a matter of time before we\u2019re drowning in personal essay films. Having seen what Rebeca Huntt can do with the format, however, I say, \u201cBring \u2019em on!\u201d Her film gives me hope \u2014 if only her docu-inclined peers could have the same self-awareness and intuition when shaping their experience.<\/p>\n<p>An insightful, engaging and all-around affirmational auto-portrait from an Afro-Latina New Yorker with an ear for poetry and an eye for the ineffable, \u201cBeba\u201d never questions its own right to exist. \u201cYou are now entering my universe. I am the lens, the subject, the authority,\u201d she says at the outset, betraying a thoughtful, liberal-arts-college sensibility. \u201cI carry an ancient pain that I struggle to understand,\u201d she continues, confronting head-on the angst she feels as a woman of color, knowing full well that those with the easiest access to microphones and cameras will accuse her of whining, of playing the victim.<\/p>\n<p>For a film like this to work, its creator can\u2019t hide her flaws \u2014 which is saying something in a medium where movie stars so often do the opposite, insisting they be shot only from their flattering side or nixing scenes that make them seem weak. By contrast, Huntt takes strength from sharing both the good and the bad about herself. Imperfections make her credible, as Huntt pushes herself to be as authentic as possible \u2014 some might say \u201craw,\u201d though her sense of montage is far too refined for that.<\/p>\n<p>Also, let\u2019s not kid ourselves: Beba, the version of herself that Huntt chooses to share, is movie star material. D<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">iscovering and\/or acknowledging her power over men is part of the journey Huntt shares with us here, as when she checks in with Annie Seaton, the Bard College adviser who remembers her being surrounded by boys eager to do her bidding, and who warned her not to wear \u201cbelly shirts.\u201d It\u2019s a tough lesson \u2014 to check your own freedom of expression, lest it confirm others\u2019 prejudices \u2014 and yet that same understanding informs her creative choices on the film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Huntt grills her Venezuelan mother how it felt raising three \u201cBlack children\u201d in a racist world, berating the Latin woman for her \u201cmicroaggressive attitude\u201d (making herself look like the bully in the process). She confronts her dad, a genial Black man born on a Dominican sugar-cane plantation, about packing the family into a one-bedroom apartment on Central Park West. \u201cThis is the best I was able to afford,\u201d he explains. Had he gone for a bigger place somewhere else, \u201cWe would be in a neighborhood where, I assure you, one of you wouldn\u2019t be alive today.\u201d Still, Huntt\u2019s older sister remembers picking up crack pipes on the street and incorporating them into a grade-school diorama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeba\u201d all but overflows with such impossible-to-invent details, interweaving images of a bygone New York with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of young Black men killed by cops. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach is not without manipulation, though Huntt uses such techniques to drill down to a deeper truth. She returns to the jungles of Venezuela, which gave her freedom \u2014 plus a room of her own \u2014 and the sunny 16mm footage takes on a dreamlike quality. She enlists a handful of liberal white friends to stage a typical late-night debate, at which she snaps, \u201cI\u2019m not the answer to white supremacy! Why don\u2019t you figure it out?\u201d before storming out into the New York streets.<\/p>\n<p>Huntt interweaves all of the above with footage she\u2019s been filming for more than a decade, anticipating the harsh critiques audiences might have of her naivet\u00e9, immaturity and insecurity (which are universal enough) with thoughtful commentary. \u201cThere is nothing honorable about trying to assimilate into a system that is designed to destroy you,\u201d she says late in the film, sounding like someone who\u2019s read a lot of James Baldwin. No doubt she has.<\/p>\n<p>Huntt knows a great deal more about her subject \u2014 herself \u2014 than anyone, and yet the movie is a kind of reportage on those dimensions that elude her, like David Carr\u2019s \u201cThe Night of the Gun,\u201d in which the late journalist tracked down eyewitnesses to piece together a personal incident he couldn\u2019t recall. Here, Huntt relies on others to reflect aspects of herself that she\u2019s too close to recognize. She braids that with footage from earlier stages \u2014 a work-in-progress human being \u2014 as in a sloppy spoken-word reading where she\u2019s still trying to find her voice.<\/p>\n<p>It all comes together beautifully, with credit due to editor Isabel Freeman and composer Holland Andrews for making this meticulously structured collage feel so intuitive. Sometimes the screen is a window into the lives of complete strangers. At others, it\u2019s a mirror that reflects our own. \u201cBeba\u201d is both.
