\n Grusome photos of a blood-thirsty parasite living in the mouth of a fish having devoured its host\u2019s tongue have surfaced online.<\/p>\n

Posted to social media<\/a> by a scientist this week, the X-ray scans show an isopod, also known as tongue-eating louse, nestled in the skull of a wrasse.<\/p>\n

The 4cm-long \u201cvampire\u201d crustacean invades its host through the gills and attaches to the inside of the mouth using its strong claws.<\/p>\n

It then drinks blood from the tongue, eventually draining so much of it that the organ dies, falls off and is replaced by the burgeoning parasite.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found a tongue-eating isopod in one of our wrasse scans this morning while digitizing it,\u201d Rice University fish scientist Dr. Kory Evans said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese parasites attach themselves to the tongues of fishes and effectively become the new tongue\u2026horrifying\u201d, he wrote on Twitter on Monday.<\/p>\n

The tongue-eating louse is native to the Gulf of California, as well as parts of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not thought to be dangerous to humans, although the critter can bite if picked up alive.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the parasite\u2019s grisly feeding practice does not kill its host. Instead, the fish begins to use louse as a pseudo-tongue.<\/p>\n

Once the real tongue is drained of its blood, the louse remains there for the rest of its days, feeding off mucus and leftover blood around the mouth.<\/p>\n

Twitter users reacted in horror and wonderment to Dr Evans\u2019 scans.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, cool. A new nightmare for our Monday morning,\u201d one user groaned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is VERY cool,\u201d another wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t want to say it looks cute inside the mouth \u2026 but they look like they are doing a cute little photo shoot together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Evans replied: \u201cI think this is the most tasteful tongue parasite photo on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tongue-eating louse is far from the only gruesome parasite our planet had to offer.<\/p>\n

One parasitic flatworm found in Taiwan invades the eyes of snails, turning the app<\/a>endages into flashing stalks that resemble disco balls.<\/p>\n

The green-banded broodsac \u2013 also known as leucochloridium paradoxum \u2013 uses the tactic to attract nearby birds.<\/p>\n

Once the birds eat the snail, the parasite spreads to other victims through the avian\u2019s poo.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
