That\u2019s a \u201csearch highlight.\u201d Here\u2019s what it is and how to get rid of it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Is_There_a_Little_Icon_In_the_Windows_Search_Bar\"><\/span>Why Is There a Little Icon In the Windows Search Bar?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The icon is part of a new feature rolled out to Windows 10 and Windows 11 as part of an April 2022 update.<\/p>\n<p>The particular feature is called \u201cSearch Highlights\u201d and it integrates a rotating set of icons into the right-hand side of the toolbar search bar. Depending on the day the icons are specific\u2014such as the one seen above with a putting green and golf ball to celebrate the U.S. Open golf tournament\u2014or more generic entries on less notable days with suggested backgrounds like photos of U.S. national parks or such.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to placing the icon in the search box on Windows 10,\u00a0 the \u201cSearch Highlights\u201d feature also puts \u201chighlighted\u201d content into the search menu on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The highlights include <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, trending stories, little word of the day and quote of the day tiles (presumably rolled out on slow news days,) as well as a trending searches tile as seen above.<\/p>\n<p>If you like Microsoft\u2019s bid to mimic a sort of Google-esque daily doodle combined with a little news aggregator in your search menu then you can, naturally, just leave things how they are.<\/p>\n<p>But if you had a less than positive reaction to the change\u2014and hey, we certainly understand that\u2014it\u2019s thankfully very simple to turn off.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Remove_the_Icon_From_the_Windows_Search_Box\"><\/span>How to Remove the Icon From the Windows Search Box<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On Windows 10, right-click anywhere on your task to pull up the menu, select \u201cSearch\u201d and then uncheck \u201cShow search highlights\u201d to get rid of these icons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-812046 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/SearchHighlight2.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"586\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Although there\u2019s no search box (and thus no new icon) on Windows 11, you can still turn off the highlights in the search menu. Just open up the Settings <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> then navigate to Privacy &amp; Security &gt; Search Permissions &gt; More Settings. In the More Settings section just toggle off \u201cShow Search Highlights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! With that simple change, there won\u2019t be any more icons in the search bar or news highlights in the search menu.<\/p>\n<p>Windows 10 is still full of advertising, though.
