The DOE then ran a lottery in the order of those groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am reaching out to you in hopes of not being a forgotten statistics in a typical year for enrollment,\u201d a student wrote in a letter to the chancellor, read aloud by advocate Yiatin Chu. \u201cIt is wrong to have the city experiment on a new progressive method of admissions and use me and those in my place as the subjects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Half of applicants to high schools received an offer to their top choice, up from 46% last year, according to recent city data. Three quarters of them received an offer to one of their top three choices.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/admission-protest-373.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Eric Adams\" class=\"wp-image-22713503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/admission-protest-373.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/admission-protest-373.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/admission-protest-373.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Many have criticized Mayor Eric Adams and Banks for their continued support of the new admission policies. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Matthew McDermott<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Proponents said the changes should increase diversity at some of the city\u2019s most selective high schools, including Townsend\u00a0Harris\u00a0High\u00a0School, Millennium Brooklyn\u00a0High\u00a0School and NYC Lab\u00a0School\u00a0for Collaborative Studies \u2014 which gave higher percentages of offers to Black and hispanic students this year than in past admissions cycles.<\/p>\n<p>The process is separate from applying to specialized high schools, which rely on the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) for entry.<\/p>\n<p>School officials this week restated a commitment to providing opportunities for feedback and to improve the process in future years, but some students who went through this admission cycle may be stuck with their assignments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I opened up my email, my heart sunk,\u201d said Samantha, an eighth grader, whose 98 and above average did not get her into her dream school last week. \u201cThe only thought in my head was this must be a mistake.
