\n President Trump accused Joe Biden of politicizing the coronavirus pandemic at a White House briefing Thursday after the presumptive Democratic nominee called for a nationwide mask mandate.<\/p>\n

Trump said Biden\u2019s call for the mandate showed an \u201capp<\/a>alling lack of respect\u201d for the American people and added the former vice president offered no guidance on how the federal government would enforce it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe does not identify what authority the president has to issue such a mandate or how federal law enforcement could enforce it,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump said that his administration has taken a different approach, delegating mask-wearing policies to state governments, while encouraging Americans to mask up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s up to the governors. We want to have a certain freedom,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the president has the unilateral power to order every single citizen to cover their face in nearly all instances, what other powers does he have? That\u2019s why he refused, Biden, to take questions, he couldn\u2019t answer any of them,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy administration has a different approach, we have urged Americans to wear masks. This is a patriotic thing to do,\u201d he added. \u201cWe do not need to bring the full weight of the federal government down on law abiding Americans to accomplish this goal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSleepy Joe rejects the scientific approach in favor of locking all Americans in their basements for months on end,\u201d the president quipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to shut down our economy, close our schools and grind society to a halt, and he wants it done by a federal decree.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a brief speech in Delaware earlier Thursday, Biden called for the mask mandate. He took no questions on specifics of his plan by reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s just institute a mass mandate nationwide starting immedia<\/a>tely. And we will save \u2014 the estimates are that we will save 40,000 lives in the next three months once that is done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe a patriot. Protect your fellow citizens. Step up,\u201d Biden said. \u201cDo the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump added that Biden wants to \u201cfling open\u201d American borders amid the pandemic, and accused him of putting \u201cleft-wing politics\u201d ahead of scientific evidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe Biden wants to fling open American borders, allowing the pandemic to infiltrate every US community based on his policies,\u201d Trump said. \u201cHe wants to have ridiculous open borders.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
