“#NYC payphone booth haven for heroin-addicts, locals say<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A disused Midtown payphone booth is getting new life \u2014 as a daytime shooting gallery for drug users, people in the area told The Post on Thursday.<\/p>\n

At least two people a day brazenly inject themselves in the nook on 39th Street between 5th and 6th avenues, typically between 10 a.m. and noon, according to the owner of a nearby restaurant and catering business.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey come with a kit \u2014 a bag, a cooking device and the needle that\u2019s waiting for them on top of the phone,\u201d said Wendy Powell.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would just like for the booth to go away, but we know that isn\u2019t going to fix the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Post reporter spotted two needles sitting atop a phone in the booth and a small baggie with traces of white powder on the ground Thursday afternoon. The booth in question has two phones separated by a metal barrier, though only one of the lines actually works.<\/p>\n

The repurposed kiosk has been all the rage among drug users since the coronavirus outbreak, Powell said, but \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that anyone\u2019s doing about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalled recently calling 911 after spotting a healthy-seeming young man standing with a needle in his arm inside the booth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guy knew we were calling the police, he could hear us, and just continued,\u201d she said, \u201cand then he shot up in his second arm, and walked down the street with bloody arms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her employee, 34-year-old Joseph Casale, said that in his 10 years as a New Yorker, \u201cI\u2019ve never seen people shooting up so openly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s an actual congregation of people shooting up,\u201d he said. \u201cI just hope the city can stop in and try to resolve the situation. It\u2019s scary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pre-pandemic, folks would use the booth for \u201csome weird stuff,\u201d Casale added, \u201cbut it\u2019s way worse now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad. People are going through tough times and the booth is helping enable them.\u201d<\/p>\n

A construction worker across the street, who would only give his first name, John, 48, was also shocked by the shameless display.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day like clockwork they are in that phone booth unpacking their paraphernalia like they can\u2019t get that poison in them fast enough,\u201d he said. \u201cRight out in the open!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey act like no one can see them, but you can, and it\u2019s a tragic thing to witness.\u201d<\/p>\n

The native New Yorker said the scene reminds him of the bad Big App<\/a>le of the 1970s and \u201980s.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing this now brings back memories that I hoped to forget,\u201d John said. \u201cFor the city to come back to this so quickly, I just can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n
