\n Burna Boy is, well, on fire.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, the Nigerian artist felt like worldwide royalty when he was app<\/a>roached by the Queen B \u2014 um, yes, Beyonc\u00e9 \u2014 to work with her on last year\u2019s \u201cThe Lion King: The Gift\u201d album.<\/p>\n

Now, as people all over the planet are still streaming Bey\u2019s \u201cBlack Is King\u201d on repeat \u2014 and hearing Burna Boy\u2019s smooth but funky jam \u201cJa Ara E\u201d \u2014 the international sensation, born Damini Ogulu, is embracing his own ascending stardom with his new album, \u201cTwice as Tall,\u201d out Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a time when everybody has to be the best version of themselves and the strongest version of themselves,\u201d Burna, 29, tells The Post on the phone from London, where he has made his first trip<\/a> from his Lagos, Nigeria, home base since the pandemic to launch his album.<\/p>\n

The Grammy-nominated singer \u2014 and two-time winner of the BET Award for Best International Act \u2014 made his new LP during lockdown. His joyous single \u201cWonderful\u201d is exactly what the world needs to uplift beat-down spirits right now. \u201cBut that wasn\u2019t really the inspiration behind the song,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d been on tour for the past three years nonstop, so this pandemic was like a blessing and a curse, \u2019cause I got to spend more time with my family and myself than I have in years. So that\u2019s where \u2018Wonderful\u2019 comes from. I recorded it in the beginning of the pandemic, when I first got home \u2026 not really knowing the full extent of how long [it would be].\u201d<\/p>\n

The way he\u2019s been bringing the heat, Burna Boy is sure living up to the moniker he got from his late friend Gambo in 2010. \u201cI\u2019ve lived up to the name since before you knew the name,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cIt\u2019s nothing new for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Growing up in Port Harcourt, Nigeria \u2014 with a dad who managed a welding company and a mom who was a translator \u2014 Burna Boy was groomed for his own kind of greatness. And clearly music was in his blood: His younger sister, Nissi, is also a singer, and his grandfather, music journalist Benson Idonije, once managed Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. \u201c[Music] is something that\u2019s generational,\u201d he says of his family legacy. \u201cIt\u2019s very special to me and my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a kid, Burna was schooled on American hip-hop artists such as Naughty by Nature and DMX. And after moving to London to further his studies, he embraced dancehall, grime and other musical genres.<\/p>\n

That led Burna to create what he describes as \u201cAfro-fusion\u201d music. \u201cIt has Afrobeat as the base, the foundation,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then you have a bunch of other genres sprinkled on top, just depending on the mood \u2014 hip-hop, R&B, reggae, dancehall, whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burna brings his Afro-fusion flavor to a new collaboration with Sam Smith on the single \u201cMy Oasis.\u201d So how exactly did this unlikely pairing come about? \u201cI\u2019ve always been a big fan of Sam Smith,\u201d he said. \u201cHe hit me up to do the song, and I said yes. It was a no-brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n

And with his mom Bose Ogulu \u2014 also known as Mama Burns \u2014 as his manager, Burna Boy will no doubt be making more big moves. \u201cShe makes sure my business is right,\u201d he said, adding with a laugh: \u201cShe makes sure I make money.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
