Sean Patrick Maloney inflated his role in a software company, claiming several times over the last decade that he built it \u201cfrom scratch\u201d \u2014 despite officially joining the business after it launched, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney \u2014\u00a0 a Democrat who represents Orange and Putnam Counties but is currently running for a nearby Congressional seat\u00a0 \u2014 started as the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> counsel for Kiodex in July 2000, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> reports, public records and his LinkedIn page.<\/p>\n<p>He was promoted to chief operating officer of the firm, a risk-management and consulting service for commodities traders, that fall, according to a campaign rep and reports.<\/p>\n<p>The company was registered online and with New York state months before Maloney,\u00a055,\u00a0was hired as its lawyer \u2014 but the Bill Clinton administration alum has suggested that he started Kiodex, in interviews and on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seanmaloney.house.gov\/about\/biography\">official congressional bio<\/a>\u00a0states: \u201cWhen Sean left the White House, he built his own business from scratch. His high-tech startup created hundreds of New York jobs,\u201d with nearly identical language\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seanmaloney.com\/meetsean\">on his campaign website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney \u2014 the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who is currently vying to represent New York\u2019s newly redrawn 17th Congressional district \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have been stretching the truth about his role at Kiodex for several years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/patrick-maloney-getty-06.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"eps. That\u2019s been his number one [priority] for as long as he\u2019s been in professional life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Sean, it\u2019s always about what\u2019s good for Sean, and all other considerations are irrelevant in his mind \u2026 so I\u2019m not surprised at all,\u201d scoffed the communications pro.<\/p>\n<p>The source \u2014 who was familiar with how his campaign sought to pitch itself to voters when he first ran for the House seat he now occupies \u2014 said Maloney\u2019s repeatedly touting  his business bona fides was aimed at \u201cappealing to independent voters\u201d in the suburban district.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1010\" height=\"752\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-19-at-8.04.51-PM.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of a 2013 Facebook post.\" class=\"wp-image-22725738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-19-at-8.04.51-PM.png 1010w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-19-at-8.04.51-PM.png?w=505 505w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1010px) 100vw, 1010px\"\/><figcaption>In July 2013, he posted on Facebook, \u201cI built my own business from scratch, so I know how difficult owning your own business can be.\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was about molding a resume to appeal to a moderate district,\u201d the insider explained.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, during his first of two unsuccessful bids for New York state Attorney General,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080226074734\/http:\/seanmaloney.com\/About\/\">his campaign website\u00a0<\/a>provided an accurate account of his career in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSean is an experienced business executive, having served from 2000-03 as chief operating officer of Kiodex, Inc., a Warburg Pincus portfolio company that provides risk management solutions to the commodities derivatives markets,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n<p>But as the November 2012 congressional race against Republican opponent Nan Hayworth, whom he beat by three points, neared, Maloney ramped up his description to say that he \u201cbuilt his own business from scratch\u201d on his site.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">During <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SmallBusinessweek?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SmallBusinessweek<\/a>, we celebrate entrepreneurs in the HV who are working hard creating jobs &amp; driving economic growth in our region. I started my own business &amp; I know how hard navigating the red tape can be \u2013 get in touch w\/ my office if your small business needs a hand. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wxADRddEhn\">pic.twitter.com\/wxADRddEhn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sean Patrick Maloney (@RepSeanMaloney) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSeanMaloney\/status\/990606631988678656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He also<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MaloneyforNY\/posts\/417375141660239\">\u00a0wrote on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0at the time\u00a0that he helped \u201ccreate hundreds of thousands of jobs in New York while working in President Clinton\u2019s White House and then building a software company from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After winning the House seat, Maloney continued to say he created his own business \u201cfrom scratch,\u201d including in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seanmaloney.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/representative-maloney-kicks-off-congress-at-your-company\">press release\u00a0<\/a>about a \u201cCongress at Your Company\u201d event at MasterCard\u2019s headquarters\u00a0during<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>his first month as a federal lawmaker.<\/p>\n<p>The next month,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seanmaloney.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/gillibrand-and-maloney-announce-made-in-america-manufacturing-act-to\">he said in a press release<\/a>, \u201cAfter starting my own business I helped create the public-private partnership commission in the Governor\u2019s office.\u201d In July 2013, he\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/repseanmaloney\/posts\/644701262209366\">posted on Facebook<\/a>, \u201cI built my own business from scratch, so I know how difficult owning your own business can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s expressed similar sentiments in more recent public statements.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/patrick-maloney-getty-05.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\" Rep. He will face off against state Sen. Alexandria Biaggi of Westchester in the Aug. 23 Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney worked for about five years at white-shoe law firm Willkie Farr &amp; Gallagher LLP before serving in various roles in the White House, including special assistant to the president staff secretary.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to level positions at Kiodex from 2000 to 2003, before returning to the law firm, running unsuccessfully for New York\u2019s state Attorney General and working in the governor\u2019s Executive Chamber. He then headed to law firms Kirkland &amp; Ellis and Orrick Herrington &amp; Sutcliffe LLP, before heading to Washington DC in 2013 to represent a suburban swing district.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, Maloney has opted to inflate his role at Kiodex, including on at least nine separate occasions declaring he had started it \u201cfrom scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rep for Maloney insisted that the congressman \u201cwas one of four executives who built Kiodex from the ground up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company\u2019s other founders have confirmed that Rep. Maloney was a co-founder who was vital in Kiodex\u2019s development,\u201d added the campaign spokesperson, Mia Ehrenberg. \u201cAny effort to nit-pick his influence at the company is clearly false and motivated by political smear campaigns rather than reporting the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout any factual basis, The Post seems to think they know better than the founding CEO of Kiodex, who has verified all of Rep. Maloney\u2019s claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement provided by Maloney\u2019s campaign, the CEO and co-founder of Kiodex, Marty Chavez, said that Maloney \u201cwas a key member of my original founding team, helping me create Kiodex from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSean and Raj [Mahajan] were the two first people I spoke with about Kiodex. Sean played a critical role in our earliest, formative days, helping Kiodex weather great challenges during the September 11 attacks and the resulting economic turmoil,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney\u2019s spokesperson also pointed The Post to<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessofbusiness.com\/articles\/goldman-sachs-marty-chavez-interview\/\">\u00a0a December 2020 interview\u00a0<\/a>in which Chavez said the Fiodex\u2019s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cco-founders and I all went on to do interesting things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of them is a senior partner at Goldman, another one is a US Congressman from the State of New York,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But prior accounts of the firm\u2019s early stages \u2013 before Maloney became a powerful member of Congress and the Democratic Party \u2014 paint a different picture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kiodex\u2019s domain name was first registered in November 1999, months before Maloney\u2019s Clinton administration departure.<\/p>\n<p>On February 4, 2000, as Maloney was working in the White House, \u201cKiodex, Inc\u201d was registered as a corporation with New York State\u2019s Department of State. And on April 27, 2000, the start-up submitted a Uniform Commercial Code filing to report that it had obtained a commercial business loan.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/2000\/06\/02\/trading-places\/5a770ca3-e3b3-4ac7-aec2-a96e6cf02d1a\/?utm_term=.2891b42c0abd\">reported on June 2, 2000<\/a>\u00a0that Maloney would soon leave the White House to \u201cbecome general counsel of Kiodex,\u201d\u00a0which was sold in 2004.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20000916092312\/http:\/www.kiodex.com\/AtNewYork.pdf\">Kiodex announced its official launch<\/a>\u00a0on June 12 2000. A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20000916092339\/http:\/\/www.kiodex.com\/AtNewYork2.pdf\">June 28, 2000 Kiodex newsletter<\/a>\u00a0announced that Maloney was chosen as general counsel of the firm, where he would be tasked with \u201cdeveloping and managing the company\u2019s legal, regulatory and communications strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A November 2000 Business Wire story revealed Maloney\u00a0was\u00a0\u201crecently named\u201d Chief Operating Officer.<\/p>\n<p>Years later,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/03\/business\/dealbook\/goldmans-tech-chief-pushes-the-bank-to-be-more-open-like-him.html\">an April 2016 New York Times story<\/a>\u00a0describes Maloney as \u201cone of Mr. Chavez\u2019s deputies at Kiodex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Maloney campaign could not provide any contemporaneous proof that Maloney was a leader\u00a0of Kiodex when it was first created.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
