In the beginning, beautiful animation can fool us into thinking that Kon\u2019s film won&#8217;t become a very dark and disturbing story that really messes with our heads. Darren Aronofsky was blown away by <em>Perfect Blue<\/em> and even recreated a bathtub scene from it in <em>Requiem for a Dream<\/em>. <em>Perfect Blue<\/em> heavily influenced Aronofsky\u2019s <em>Black Swan<\/em> too. The Japanese film director was embarrassed to see the copied scene and wrote that Aronofsky was paying <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/animationobsessive.substack.com\/p\/the-real-history-of-perfect-blue?s=r\">too much homage<\/a> &#8211; but that&#8217;s another story. (For what it&#8217;s worth, Kon&#8217;s later film <em>Paprika<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.com\/black-swan-inception-satoshi-kon-hollywood-influence\/\">heavily influenced<\/a> Christopher Nolan&#8217;s <em>Inception<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>An examination of identity, alienation, and fame, <em>Perfect Blue<\/em> blurs our ability to distinguish between a complete nightmare and reality. When Mima starts work on a brutally violent TV show called <em>Double Bind<\/em> that includes a traumatic rape scene and agrees to a provocative photo shoot, the problems start.<\/p>\n<p>In the process of creating her new identity, the girl sets aside her old doll-like image \u2013 but it is clear that somebody will do anything to protect that image. Mima becomes a victim of stalking and finds a website called <em>Mima\u2019s Room<\/em> that includes frighteningly intimate details about her life. Also, she discovers a ghost of her past self that hasn\u2019t given up singing. Madness blends with the script of Mima\u2019s debut role, and people around Mima end up getting murdered. The film goes completely insane and offers plot twist after plot twist.<br \/>\n<!-- Zone: character count repeatable. --><br \/>\n <!-- No winning ad found for zone: word count #3! --><br \/>\n<span class=\"related-single\">Related: Best Animated Horror Movies, Ranked<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As Mima asks questions, we ask the same ones. Who is posting things only Mima could know on a website? Is it her obsessed fan Mamoru? What if Mima has developed a multiple personality disorder and writes on an online page without knowing? Is she a real Mima or a fake one? Is she a multiple-personality killer? Maybe there&#8217;s someone else. Maybe Mima&#8217;s manager and former pop-idol Rumi is an aged Mima. Maybe the world of <em>Double Bind<\/em> is real and everything else, including her whole J-pop career, is an imagined delusion. Maybe we&#8217;re all in Mima&#8217;s dream, someone\u2019s hallucination, or a scene from a TV show. The film exists on almost too many levels of reality.<\/p>\n<p>Until the end of <em>Perfect Blue<\/em>, we simply don&#8217;t know what to believe. &#8220;It\u2019s the difficulty of figuring it out that is at the core of the film&#8221;, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.alltheanime.com\/interview-satoshi-kon\/\">Satoshi Kon said<\/a>. The director believes that it is not the object of the film to distinguish reality from illusion, but rather the area between the two in which the frustration and mystery lies. <em>Perfect Blue<\/em> focuses on the process by which the victim\u2019s psyche is destroyed. There&#8217;s even reaction videos of people watching the film for the first time. <\/p>\n<p><em>Perfect Blue<\/em> leaves a lot of people disoriented, confused, and disturbed. We can find plenty of straightforward explanations of the film if we want to <em>\u2014<\/em> but it seems that viewers do not believe these explanations, because the plot of <em>Perfect Blue<\/em> is rather challenging to decipher, with truth and fantasy constantly blurring into one.
