\n A Colorado lawmaker is under fire for using the phrases \u201cstep on the neck\u201d and \u201ccolored people\u201d during a committee hearing \u2014 prompting calls on social media<\/a> for him to resign.<\/p>\n

State Sen. Bob Woodward, a Republican from Loveland, used the phrases on the Colorado State Senate floor Saturday while discussing a bill regarding wage garnishments as debt collections, Colorado Politics reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Saturday, I stood in the well and uttered two phrases that are offensive,\u201d Woodward said Monday. \u201cFor that I am sorry. Those phrases were uttered in ignorance, not out of hate or spite.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodward, who is white, acknowledged he was wrong to say Senate Bill 211 would \u201cstep on the neck\u201d of Coloradans if passed, particularly in light of George Floyd\u2019s May 25 police-custody death in Minneapolis, where Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into the man\u2019s neck for nearly 9 minutes, killing him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI realized mid-sentence that I was about to say something too raw,\u201d Woodward said in a statement to the Denver Post. \u201cIn my mind, I stopped before I\u2019d finished that phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Woodward admitted having another take after watching a video of his comments, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou saw me stumble to stop and say something else,\u201d Woodward said. \u201cBut I clearly uttered the phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodward in his statement also asked for forgiveness while promising to do a \u201cbetter job,\u201d the Denver Post reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I screw up, call me on it,\u201d Woodward said. \u201cHelp me learn and understand. I\u2019ll do my best to grant you the same grace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodward said he only uttered the phrase \u201ccolored people\u201d because it had been incorrectly written by a Senate staffer into a transcript<\/a> of proceedings from Saturday, the news<\/a>paper reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI own it,\u201d Woodward told Colorado Politics. \u201cI should have proofread it better. I should have gone back to the audio to make sure she actually said those words.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Woodward\u2019s mea culpa, several people on Twitter have since called on him to resign.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a disgrace to Colorado with your \u2018step on the neck\u2019 comment \u2013 resign or we\u2019ll throw you out \u2014 POS,\u201d one post read.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope people \u2018step on your neck\u2019 the ballot box, racist pig,\u201d another read.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
