\n The Islanders\u2019 power play went just 4-for-16 during the play-in series<\/a> against the Panthers and its struggles have spilled over into the first round against the Capitals.<\/p>\n

Going 0-for-3 on the power play Wednesday, the Islanders generated just five shots with the man-advantage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we had five chances on our power plays, we had a couple good looks, but obviously we didn\u2019t get a goal,\u201d Trotz said Thursday in preparation for Friday\u2019s Game<\/a> 2. \u201cIf you can get one every game, then you stand a good chance of winning a hockey game. I liked a lot of things that we did, but they have a good penalty kill.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey haven\u2019t been scored on, I don\u2019t think, in a game since they\u2019ve come back here and they\u2019ve been strong all year in that area. We know that we\u2019re up against it, we\u2019re making a couple adjustments and seeing if we have any success.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

The Islanders could\u2019ve lost their heads when the penalty box became a revolving door for them through the first two periods of Game 1, but they didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Spending what felt like, and really was, more than half the first period on the penalty kill, the Islanders somehow managed to take a 0-0 score into the first intermission. And when the penalty calls kept rolling in and Washington eventually capitalized on back-to-back man-advantages in the second, the Islanders didn\u2019t flinch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the biggest thing is that we trust our game, we trust what we need to do,\u201d Trotz said Thursday. \u201cIf we don\u2019t get to it right off the bat, we don\u2019t change our game dramatically. I think that\u2019s where you get the consistency and over time it pays off, it pays dividends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of hope that something happ<\/a>ens, it\u2019s just sort of chipping away, if you will. Our mental approach is just being consistent, play our game, get to our game and if we get to our game for a long period of time then we\u2019ll general<\/a>ly have success. It doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re going to have success all the time, but it\u2019s going to give you the opportunity to have success on a pretty regular basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Islanders came charging back with four unanswered goals spanning from the end of the second and throughout the third to take a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven first round series. After the game, Islanders players pointed to their ability to stick to their systems and structures as to why they were able to grind out the win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the confidence we have within our group is huge and we just build off of every shift, we build off the line before and when we play five on five, we\u2019re at our most dangerous,\u201d Casey Cizikas said. \u201cWe have four lines that can move the puck and get the puck in deep and that are fast. We just keep continuing to build more and more throughout the game and I think in the third period is all came together for us. We kept it simple.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

The Islanders held a hefty advantage from the faceoff dot Wednesday, winning 64.7 percent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we did well,\u201d Casey Cizikas said. \u201cI saw something online where I think I was the worst one, I had 50 percent. That\u2019s what you want from your centerman, you want to win those draws, you want possession, you want to have the puck on your side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brock Nelson led the Islanders, going 14-for-20 from the circle, while Mathew Barzal went 8-for-11. Evgeny Kuznetsov was 6-for-12 for the Capitals.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
