He owned the last nightclub incarnation of Studio 54, and, by his own admission, enjoyed more than his fair share of illicit substances. Threesomes were commonplace, as was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2014\/10\/11\/studio-54-owner-pens-book-about-clubs-dark-side\/?_ga=2.171599785.840180370.1655908791-2080335847.1644519892\">boozing and coking it up <\/a>with Robin Williams, tennis star Vitas Gerulaitis and other members of his after-hours loving \u201cDawn Patrol.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Come July 13, however, Fleischman will drop his final drug: a lethal dose of barbiturates. With the assistance of the Swiss non-profit group <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dignitas.ch\/?lang=en\">Dignitas<\/a>, Fleischman, 82, will commit legal suicide. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t walk, my speech is f\u2013ked up and I can\u2019t do anything for myself,\u201d Fleischman, who is confined to a wheelchair, told The Post. \u201cMy wife helps me get into bed and I can\u2019t dress or put on my shoes. I am taking a gentle way out. Mark doesn\u2019t have balance. He drops things and does not know where his body is in space,\u201d Mimi Fleischman, his wife of 27 years, told The Post. \u201cDoctors originally thought he had a form of Parkinson\u2019s. But it is not that. Nobody knows what he has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His commitment to assisted suicide, Fleischman said, is not rash and has been percolating for at least two years. \u201cI came to the decision slowly,\u201d he said. \u201cTwo years ago, I decided that it wasn\u2019t worth living. I took a lot of Xanax and ended up in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ER doctors brought him back from the brink of death, but, soon after, \u201cI read a book about ending life. I read in there that the easiest way is to suffocate. But I did not want the pain. I was going to buy a gun. But my wife interceded. We started looking into a place where it would be legal to find someone to do it with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Mimi tried talking him out of the decision, but has decided to respect his wishes. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be horrible,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is my partner and we are devoted to each other. So it is the end of a part of me as well. I have to honor what he wants. [But] he is not giving me a choice. Fleishman\u2019s im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te family supports him in his decision to end his life. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Assisted suicide is illegal in California, and you need to be a resident in any of the 10 states where it is legal. Instead, Mimi found Dignitas for Mark. <\/p>\n<p>Dignitas launched in 1998 and is devoted to helping people commit suicide when their health is failing. In the case of Fleischman, members of the organization reviewed his medical records and had a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of conversations with him. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to be certain that I am making the decision for myself,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter reading my material, they asked me some questions to make sure I was serious. I had to provide a notarized affidavit, stating that I want to die. I had to go to a psychiatrist and he confirmed that I am of sound mind. I provided all that and they said they want me over there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization will provide Fleischman with his life-ending medication and a place in which to consume it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen,\u201d he continued, \u201cthey take care of the body. They will cremate me and forward the ashes to Mimi in California. Considering that I have never been to Zurich, maybe we will sight-see a little bit. Then, on Wednesday, I meet in the apartment that Dignitas has. I take a drink, I fall asleep and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleischman will not be alone. \u201cMimi,\u201d he said, \u201cwill be right next to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that\u00a0he\u2019s passed the psychological\u00a0tests, said Fleischman, \u201cI have what they call a provisional green light.\u201d If, for some unforeseen reason, that were to change before his scheduled date, \u201cI will tell them that I will jump out the window and leave a nasty note about how they tricked me into coming to Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"692\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/studio-54-80s-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The main dance floor at studio 54 during the early 1980s. I lived on my own terms. I am not afraid of anything. Not even death. I look forward to it. I don\u2019t believe in the hereafter. But I want to know what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens when I die. I\u2019m curious. If I do come back as something else, I think it will be a wolf or a polar bear, an animal that has a good life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleischman\u2019s candor puts him in the minority, as most people who choose assisted suicide play it close to the vest. For a while, he planned to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to go to Zurich and \u2018have a stroke\u2019 while on vacation,\u201d he said. \u201cI think people are ashamed [of assisted suicide]. But there is no shame in what I am doing. It is proper and reasonable at my age. I have done everything and been everywhere and met everyone I want to meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, he figures that the very splendidness of his existence makes it difficult to continue living under current conditions. \u201cIf I hadn\u2019t lived the way I did, and had as much fun as I had, it might be different,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now I am like a vegetable. Always drawn to the elitist route, he enlisted in the US Navy Officer Candidate School in the early 1960s as a means of avoiding the draft. He ran the officers club at a naval base in New Jersey and was released from service. <\/p>\n<p>In his mid 20s, Fleischman, with an investment from his father, took over the Forest Hills Inn, a 300-room hotel located near the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1970s he regularly partied hard at Studio 54, where he met club owners <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/10\/06\/ian-schrager-kept-jail-time-a-secret-from-kids-after-fall-of-studio-54\/?_ga=2.98732823.840180370.1655908791-2080335847.1644519892\">Ian Schrager<\/a> and Steve Rubell. After the two were sentenced for tax evasion in 1980, Fleischman convened with them and their<strong> <\/strong>attorney Roy Cohn in a jailhouse sit-down. It was agreed that he would assume ownership of the club. He took on Studio 54\u2019s debt and, in a later deal, transferred ownership of his Executive Hotel in Murray Hill to Schrager and Rubell, who turned it into the now shuttered Morgans, said to be the first boutique hotel in NYC.<\/p>\n<p>Owning Studio, Fleischman recalled, was a blast. When the time comes for him to die, Fleischman says Mimi will be right by his side.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen you owned Studio 54, all of a sudden you became a semi celebrity,\u201d said Fleischman. \u201cAt 4 in the morning, I would take a bunch of people in the limousine and we would go to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/11\/20\/former-stripper-tanqueray-steals-spotlight-on-humans-of-new-york-blog\/?_ga=2.137110329.840180370.1655908791-2080335847.1644519892\">Crisco Disco<\/a>\u201d \u2014 an after-hours haunt, named for a lubricant of choice among gay Manhattanites \u2014\u00a0where they would imbibe<strong> <\/strong>in a mix of cocaine and ketamine powder concocted by the club\u2019s owner<strong>.<\/strong> \u201cThere was great music and sex all over. I would go there to pick up women. All the women who went there were easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After five years, from 1981 until 1986, Studio 54 and the lifestyle that came with it had both run their course for him: \u201cIt can destroy you. You can live that way for only so long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked to be high. So I would do drugs and drink. Possibly, this [health condition] is because I drank a lot and did drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, he added: \u201cI don\u2019t regret any part of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Mark-Fleischman-mimi-10.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Fleischman and his beloved wife, Mimi, who will travel with him to Switzerland and be at his side when he chooses to end his life. He married publishing executive Laurie Lister in 1986. They had a daughter Hilary \u2014\u00a0she remains close to her father but would not comment on-the-record about his decision \u2014\u00a0and divorced in the early 1990s after Fleischman got back into the nightlife business with a Midtown hotspot called Tatou. <\/p>\n<p>After moving to Los Angeles, he wed Mimi in 1994 and partnered to open the hip-hop centric Century Club in Los Angeles. He also got into the fitness business via a workout studio, Bar Method. It all followed on the heels of an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/09\/18\/studio-54-owner-claims-trump-screwed-him-over\/?_ga=2.128093061.840180370.1655908791-2080335847.1644519892\">ill-fated project<\/a> with Donald Trump. When the former president owned the Plaza Hotel in the early 1990s, Fleischman made a deal to open a club there called Gauguin. \u201cWhile we were in construction, the hotel was foreclosed on,\u201d Fleischman revealed to Page Six. \u201cTrump hadn\u2019t told me. He couldn\u2019t walk either,\u201d Fleischman said. \u201cHe said to me, \u2018I want to die.\u2019 I believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having lost his parents and brother, Fleischman has shared his suicide plans with the remaining members of his immediate family. Everybody else, he said, \u201ccan read about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mimi holds no beliefs that her husband will chicken out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs he prepares to go through the Pearly Gates, he can change his mind \u2014\u00a0but I don\u2019t think he will,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more I think about it, the more I want to do it,\u201d he said. \u201cI am flying direct to Zurich from LA.
