Forty kilowatts of power is enough to run 30 households for ten years continuously.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Energy\u2019s Idaho National Laboratory will award 12-month contracts to the following companies to each develop preliminary designs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lockheed Martin of Bethesda, Maryland \u2013 The company will partner with BWXT and Creare.<\/li>\n<li>Westinghouse of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania \u2013 The company will partner with Aerojet Rocketdyne.<\/li>\n<li>IX of Houston, Texas, a joint venture of Intuitive Machines and X-Energy \u2013 The company will partner with Maxar and Boeing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/nasa-nuclear-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Fission surface power system.\" class=\"wp-image-22810955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/nasa-nuclear-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/nasa-nuclear-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/nasa-nuclear-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>A nuclear reactor could produce the power needed to operate rovers, conduct experiments and help support life on the moon.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">NASA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe Fission Surface Power project is a very achievable first step toward the United States establishing nuclear power on the Moon,\u201d said Idaho National Laboratory Director John Wagner. \u201cI look forward to seeing what each of these teams will accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPlentiful energy will be key to future space exploration,\u201d said Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA\u2019s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) in Washington. \u201cI expect fission surface power systems to greatly benefit our plans for power architectures for the Moon and Mars and even drive innovation for uses here on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The system will be relatively small and lightweight compared to other power systems. Fission systems are reliable and could enable continuous power regardless of location, sunlight and other natural environmental conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NASA says that phase one of the program will provide them with critical information from an industry that can lead to the joint development of a complete flight-certified fission power system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeveloping these early designs will help us lay the groundwork for powering our long-term human presence on other worlds,\u201d Reuter said.<\/p>\n<p>Fission surface power technologies will also help NASA mature\u00a0nuclear propulsion systems\u00a0that rely on reactors to generate power and could potentially be used in deep space exploration missions.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
