field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/108573962\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-3.19%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was the only cryptocurrency he was prepared to publicly label a commodity, rather than a security, in an interview with CNBC. <\/p>\n<p> The debate over whether any particular cryptocurrency can be labeled a commodity rather than a security has far reaching implications because financial instruments that are securities can only be legally sold to the public if the issuer registers with the SEC and adheres to strict disclosure regime. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cMany of these tokens\u2026the investing public is hoping for a return just like when they invest in other financial assets we call securities,\u201d he said in an interview on Squawk Box. \u201cMany of these financial assets, crypto financial assets have the key attributes of a security,\u201d and are therefore under the SEC\u2019s jurisdiction. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome like bitcoin, and that\u2019s the only one I\u2019m gonna say\u2026my predecessors and others have said, they\u2019re a commodity,\u201d he added, noting this classification gives the Commodity Futures Trading Commission a key role in overseeing bitcoin markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s two great market regulators in this country,\u201d Gensler continued, arguing that the agencies have the capacity to work together to bring fairness, transparency and investor protection to markets for digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>Prices for digital assets like bitcoin and ether<br \/>\n        ETHUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/108573964\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-5.18%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      have fallen significantly in recent weeks, though have shown signs of stabilization more recently. <\/p>\n<p>The has fallen nearly 60% over the past six months, but is up about 1% over the last week, according to
