\n \u201cThe Wire\u201d star Michael K. Williams made a surprise app<\/a>earance at a City Council hearing Tuesday to pledge his support for reform in the NYPD.<\/p>\n

The actor, who grew up in Brooklyn, said the money would be better used toward funding social<\/a> services benefiting the city\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a young man growing up in the projects of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, I\u2019ve grown accustomed to being over-policed,\u201d\u00a0 Williams, who is black, told the council\u2019s public safety subcommittee. \u201cI\u2019ve normalized the institutionalization of my friends and my family from school to prison.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams \u2014 best known for his \u201cThe Wire\u201d character \u201cOmar Little,\u201d who wielded a sawed off shotgun and whistled Elmer Fudd\u2019s \u2018a hunting we will go\u201d as he ripped off drug dealers on the mean streets of 1990s Baltimore \u2014 is a partner of NYC Together.<\/p>\n

He said the not-for-profit youth organization \u201cleverages their strength so they can come up with their own solutions to community-based problems.\u201d The 53-year-old is also widely known for his role as Albert \u201cChalky\u201d White on \u201cBoardwalk Empire.\u201d<\/p>\n

The council\u2019s public safety subcommittee met via Zoom on Tuesday to discuss police reform legislation, including a ban on the use of chokeholds and bills that would require police to display their badge number and protect citizens\u2019 rights to record police activity.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city would reallocate an undetermined chunk of NYPD\u2019s budget toward youth groups in wake of growing demands for reform and criticism over the NYPD\u2019s handling of the recent George Floyd protests.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
